I went in early June to see the irises, which were stunning. Ticket purchase is by vending machine, so no need to worry re difficulties in Japanese. There is also an English-language leaflet / map available for free.
There was a lively entrance area with market stalls selling fresh produce, grilled mochi, gifts and trinkets etc, as well as vending machines for soft drinks. The irises were spectacular and tended by women in traditional Japanese gardening clothes which was a nice scene. Even though they were not in bloom, walking among the wisterias and listening to the wind in the trees is incredibly relaxing.

I noticed that there were many tadpoles among the irises so I wonder if there will be lots of frogs later in the year!
