The Kitale Museaum formerly The National Museum of Western Kenya is a multidisciplinary museum which has some rare collections from several disciplines such as history, archaeology, arts and natural history. After entering the museums, I could see the first ten galleries very much dedicated to the natural heritage of my country, having displayed collections like “flora and fauna” like various insects and birds, herbal medicinal plants, sea life of our country, rare geographical specimens of deer, tigers and so on. The galleries also contain dioramas of birds and mammals in their natural habitats along with a large skeleton of a giant elephant and sawfish and different types of butterflies and reptiles among other things.

The Museum also has a history and classical art section that displays such as ancient and medieval coins, different kinds of terracotta that were used for wall decoration in the medieval architectures. Hand axes, potteries, magnificent stone and bronze sculptures, fascinating ancient architectural specimens, ancient inscriptions and coins, manuscripts, historical documents, medals and miniature paintings are also some of the collections that are displayed in this museum in order to remind us about our glorious artworks.

Anyway, the experience of visiting the museum was multi-dimensional.

The Museum is accessible from the main road with ample uarked parking space.

Well, its conducive for Kids the benches are well placed.

Take your time to pass by the picnic area bird viewing.

Mode of payment is M-PESA

The cultural homesteads are well placed and accessible, the credible pod and snake park are fascinating.

On the downside, expect much of a proper reception and be weary of the in...

Kitale Museum is a historical gem nestled in the heart of Kitale, offering visitors a glimpse into Kenya’s rich cultural and natural heritage. However, my recent visit left me with mixed feelings. Arriving on a Monday, I was disappointed to find that the museum had already closed by 5 PM, despite its official closing time being listed as 6 PM. This early closure was unexpected and cut short what could have been an enriching experience. Additionally, the gallery, which I was particularly excited to explore, was closed, leaving me unable to view its collection. The outdoor exhibit of traditional huts, though an excellent concept for showcasing diverse Kenyan cultures, was in a somewhat neglected state. Some of the structures appeared worn out and in need of maintenance, which detracted from their authenticity and educational value. That said, the museum's potential is undeniable. With improved upkeep and adherence to its stated schedule, Kitale Museum could truly shine as a key cultural destination...

A Journey Through Time at Kitale Museum Visiting Kitale Museum was an unforgettable experience! Walking through its rich displays of history, culture, and nature felt like stepping into a living story. From the fascinating ethnographic exhibits showcasing Kenya's diverse traditions to the botanical garden filled with unique plant species, every corner of the museum offered something inspiring.

One highlight was the nature trail, where I encountered some incredible indigenous trees and even a few friendly creatures! It was a moment to reflect on the beauty of our heritage and how much there is to preserve and celebrate.

If you’re ever in Kitale, I highly recommend exploring this gem. It’s not just a museum—it’s a gateway to understanding the richness of our past and the wonders...

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another gem in Kitale! Located at the gates of Trans Nzoia in Kitale town, the museum beautifully showcases Kenya’s culture, history, and nature. You’ll also find live animals like tortoises, snakes, crocodiles, monkeys, and more, which make the visit even more exciting. The peaceful grounds, friendly staff, and insightful exhibits create a welcoming atmosphere for families, students, and visitors alike. It’s affordable, easy to access from town, and the compound offers great spots for photos. Exciting to see there are plans to modernize the old structure while keeping its heritage alive — a proud cultural landmark for the region.
