You must visit this Archaeological Site Museum when you're in Kernavė! It is located in the central part of the town, next to the bus station and the Kernavės Švč. Mergelės Marijos Škaplierinės bažnyčia. You'll need an hour or more to explore the exhibitions, especially if you're interested in ancient Lithuanian history, the history of Kernavė (Lithuania's oldest capital), and archaeology in general. The museum utilizes a modern approach to its displays. It wasn't dull at all; on the contrary, museum staff combined a permanent exhibition of tools, utensils, clothes, arms, etc., with interactive screens featuring stories and videos. I was lucky enough to enjoy great contemporary installations and thematic performances during my visit. It would be interesting for both kids and adults to visit.

A kernavėi múzeum nemcsak egy szép és modern kiállítótér, hanem egy igazi időutazás központja. Maga a helyszín is különleges: kint a várdombok csendje, bent pedig a múlt kézzel fogható emlékei várják a látogatót. Régészeti leletek, korabeli eszközök, fegyverek és ékszerek mesélnek az egykori litván fejedelemség mindennapjairól. Ami számomra igazán felejthetetlenné tette a látogatást, az az audio guide volt. Őszintén mondhatom, hogy az eddigi legrészletesebb, legátgondoltabb idegenvezetés, amivel valaha találkoztam. Nemcsak a tárgyak mellett elhelyezett információs táblák szövegét ismételte el, hanem teljes történeteket mesélt. Bevezetett a kor hangulatába, elmondta, milyen volt akkor élni, hogyan működött a társadalom, mit jelentettek a hétköznapi tárgyak az emberek számára. Néha annyira belefeledkeztem, hogy észre sem vettem, mennyi idő telt el egy-egy vitrinnél. A kiállítás elrendezése ízléses és logikus: szépen vezeti végig az embert az évszázadokon, miközben hagy időt arra is, hogy magadban elcsendesedj, elképzeld, milyen lehetett az élet itt több száz, ezer évvel ezelőtt. A tárgyak mögött ott van a teljes történelmi kontextus, így nemcsak nézel, hanem valóban megérted, amit látsz. A leletek ugyanabból a tájból kerültek elő, ahol pár órája még sétáltam a dombok között. Odakint a történelem színtere, bent pedig a múlt tárgyi bizonyítékai – a kettő együtt adja meg azt a mélységet, amit máshol ritkán éreztem. Nem túl nagy a múzeum, de minden négyzetmétere tartalommal teli. Épp annyit mutat, hogy elmerülj benne, de ne fáradj el. Ha Kernavė felé jársz, szerintem a dombok és a múzeum együtt alkotják az igazi élményt – és az audio guide-ot semmiképp ne hagyd ki, mert nélküle ez csak egy szép kiállítás lenne, vele viszont egy valódi időutazás.

Kernave is the first capital of Lithuania and a UNESCO world heritage site, but you would never have guessed. It's not really mentioned in tourist guides, the town itself has barely any tourist facilities or restaurants, and there's just hardly anything left. So a lot is left up to your imagination. Fortunately, the museum does a good job of filling in that space. It's only a 30 min bus ride from Vilnius bus station, but the bus only comes about 4 times a day. Check the schedules at the bus station in advance.
