Somewhere off a narrow village road in Balik Pulau, Penang, you’ll stumble upon it: a tall, painted shipping container standing alone in the middle of a paddy field. It’s colourful, eye-catching, and a little surreal—like someone dropped a piece of street art in the middle of farmland and simply walked away.
Getting there isn’t glamorous. The road is narrow—single-lane, dusty, and just barely car-friendly. If you’re not driving a 4x4 or don’t relish the idea of reversing a kilometre while dodging motorbikes, you might prefer to park near the entrance and walk. Be warned: it’s hot. Very hot. Bring water, sunscreen, and perhaps a hat.
The murals are large and well executed, depicting local life, cooking, and scenes from the region. Set against the green (or golden, depending on the season) paddy fields and hills in the distance, it makes for striking photos. That’s mostly what people come for: snap a few pics, soak in the view, then head off.
But here’s the thing—there’s really not much else. No café, no information booth, no stalls selling cold drinks or local snacks. In fact, it rather feels as though someone built this, then forgot to build everything else around it. A stall or two wouldn’t go amiss—anything to encourage visitors to linger a little longer. But it’s hard to tell if anyone is even managing the place.
As it stands, once you’ve taken your photos, there’s not much reason to stay. That said, it’s peaceful. The views are lovely. And best of all, it’s free—no entry fee, no one hawking souvenirs, and no crowds (unless you go on a weekend). It’s a quick detour, not a destination—and if you go in with that expectation, it’s actually a rather...

Our first stop was the Penang International Container Art Festival, a truly remarkable sight. Imagine walking through a landscape of repurposed containers, each one a canvas for bold colors, intricate designs, and thought-provoking messages. The artists have transformed discarded shipping containers into a towering, colorful spectacle, creating a vibrant landmark that stands out amidst the lush greenery.
We were so impressed by the creativity and scale of the artwork. The containers are stacked high, each one adorned with intricate designs and bold colors. It's a testament to the power of art to transform something ordinary into something extraordinary.
We were disappointed that we missed the second part of the installation, which is situated behind the main structure. We were eager to explore further, but the hot sun forced us to seek shade. However, we highly recommend that visitors take the time to see both sides of the...

At one glance, one can also mistakenly thought that you are at Sabah due to the mountainous background. Really interesting. Great place to have photography sessions. The weather was great during our visit in end December even though it's rainy season. The vast green field colored with the clear blue sky is just pleasant to the eyes. The gentle breeze brushing the paddy stalks is so soothing...
