Probably the best known of the Islands’ gardens, San Anton Gardens was laid out by Grand Master Antoine de Paule as grounds to his summer residence, San Anton Palace. From 1802 until 1964, San Anton Palace was the official residence of the British Governor, after which it remained a state building and is now the residence of the Maltese President. Various heads of state have visited the gardens over the years and numerous plaques mark their ceremonial tree planting. The garden is a botanical delight with mature trees, old stone urns, fountains, ponds and formal flower beds. The garden is formal with rustic touches and holds a wide variety of plants and flowers, such as Jacaranda trees, Norfolk Pines, Bougainvillea and roses. Nowadays, the garden is the Annual Horticultural Show venue and during summer, the spacious central court becomes an open-air theatre for drama and musical performances.

If you want to get away from it all, what better place to relax, than the Anton Gardens. Think of the Secret Garden, as the surrounding outer walls keep out all the traffic noise. Apart from the occassional low flying aircraft overhead, it's really peaceful in there. There are several fountains with statues on; with hens, swans, and peacocks dotted about the place. Turtles and a duck house provided excellent viewing, from the numerous benches. A garden wouldn't be a garden without flowers; and here there are both domestic and european plant species. There is also a mini maze to go around, as this hasn't fully grown yet.

The Maltese president's summer palace is sited here in the middle of these lush, colourful gardens. This is a place of extreme peace and tranquility l cannot be in Malta and not visit here. It has a very unique pond full of basking Terrapins amongst many water features Adjacent to the gardens is a wonderful cafe selling delicious maltese pastries and Pastizzi's The gardens are situated close to the small town of Attard on the bus route from Valletta to Mdina/ Rabat. You can spend a few, peaceful, splendid hours here. One of Malta's hidden jewels.

The kitchen garden is behind San Anton Gatdens. At the back, behind the palace, just cross the street. It's a wonderful place to go to with toddlers and young children. There are animals like a donkey, goats, pony, birds, chicken, ducks, turtles. Besides that there are wonderful play areas for the youngest ones. Toy houses, slides and more in cheerful colours. Also there's the option to sit down and have a drink. There's a cafeteria. I think this used to be the vegetable and herbs garden of the palace. Really a great place to go to with little children.

This is a lovely garden, with an atmosphere of faded opulence, lots of adventures to be had with animals who may or may not have secret quests for you (watch for the cats, they have many secrets). It isn’t stuffy and formal. This garden is like your favourite strange aunt who wears her pearls to breakfast and talks about all of her girlhood suitors. You’ll find peacocks and swans, turtles and ducks, places to sit quietly and bask in inspiration. It’s well worth a slow afternoon with a picnic.

It should have been a beautiful garden, but we were disappointed in how dry everything was. There were a few fountains where in proximity there was green foliage and animals like peacocks (with young), ducks, hens, turtles etc. present, but overall it was a bit disappointing. Maybe, because we were expecting an oasis, a garden, with more greenery to relax among... It is a nice place to take a walk, but don't expect too much. There is no entrance fee, so definitely go and try a visit.
