Between Le Morne and Baie du Cap is where you will be able to witness a stunning coastal view from up above on the Maconde View Point.

Located on the south coast of Mauritius, Baie Du Cap is a small, quaint village. The region is well known for its natural beauty and its wild, rugged coastlines.

With the picturesque land and seascapes, encompassing the red-coloured earth, the deep green forest, the lines of palm trees, and the sparkling blue sea by the side- you will have an incredible journey to the viewpoint, Maconde. It is set on a curved portion of the coastal road, on the peak of a small rocky cliff where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean.

It is believed that the name “Maconde” originates from the slavery period, where runaway slaves from the Makonde tribe of Mozambique came to seek refuge. Others believe that is was named after the governor Jean Baptiste Henri Conde, who built an outlook on the cliff.

This area was generally inaccessible until the 1920s, when the first road was built. The low-lying coast and uneven surface made it quite a challenge to drive through but recent renovations have made it much safer. The winding road along the basalt cliffs with the ocean lapping against the rocks, make for quite a sight and is a popular spot for those interested in watching the ocean swells.

The viewpoint can be accessed by climbing up a set of narrow stairs. Here you will be able to admire the remarkable ocean, the nearby coastal village and the occasional fishermen...

Maconde Viewpoint in Mauritius offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views on the island, and I would highly recommend it to anyone visiting. The journey to the viewpoint involves a long drive along winding roads, but the stunning views along the way make the trip worthwhile. Once you reach the viewpoint, you're greeted with spectacular vistas of the turquoise sea, rugged cliffs, and lush green landscapes. It’s a perfect spot for taking photos and soaking in the natural beauty of the area.

However, it's important to note that getting to the viewpoint requires a climb up a set of stairs, which can be challenging for some. The stairs are steep, and the path can be a bit tricky, especially in hot weather. This might not be suitable for individuals with mobility issues, the elderly, or those with disabilities. For them, the stairs may be difficult to navigate and could pose a safety concern.

Despite this, if you're physically able and enjoy a bit of a hike, the view is absolutely worth it. The location offers a peaceful and scenic escape, and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It’s a great spot for nature lovers, hikers, and those looking for incredible views...

The Macondé Viewpoint in the south of Mauritius is a breathtaking spot that offers stunning panoramic views of the coastline. Here’s a detailed description:

Atmosphere and Calmness The viewpoint is located on a rocky promontory along a sharp hairpin bend on the coastal road between Le Morne and Baie du Cap. The atmosphere is serene and picturesque, with the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean providing a stunning backdrop. Despite its popularity, the viewpoint retains a sense of calm, especially if you visit during off-peak hours.

Weather The weather in this region is typically warm and pleasant, with a gentle sea breeze that makes the experience even more enjoyable. The south coast of Mauritius generally enjoys a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 30°C throughout the year.

Parking Facilities Parking can be a bit challenging as there isn’t a designated parking lot nearby. Visitors usually park their cars along the roadside. It’s advisable to visit early, especially on weekends, to secure...

🗺️Topographical Features • Located near Baie du Cap on the southwest coast of Mauritius, it forms a nearly 180-degree hairpin bend on the coastal road. • From the observation deck, you can overlook the winding coastal road and the turquoise Indian Ocean, creating a dramatic scene whether photographed from the air or from the ground. 📚 Historical and Cultural Background • The name "Maconde" comes from the local Makonde people (originally from Mozambique in East Africa), who were brought to Mauritius during colonial times as indentured laborers or slaves. • Local residents once sought refuge on this headland, so the place name is closely linked to historical memory.
