The experience at the meliponario in Maní was truly unforgettable. Our host, Don Luis, welcomed us warmly and shared his deep knowledge of the Melipona bees. He explained the unique hive system, the special types of wood used for their homes, and how the bees collect pollen exclusively from medicinal plants. We learned about the healing properties of their honey, its lighter, citrus-like flavor and texture, and even the traditional Mayan fermented drink, balché, made by mixing the honey with a medicinal plant.

Don Luis also told us about the aluxes—magical beings believed to protect the bee farm—and highlighted what makes Melipona bees so different from regular bees. The tour itself was free, no reservation was needed, and at the end we chose to support the farm by purchasing honey and other handmade products.

Be aware that Melipona honey is more expensive than regular honey, but that’s because it takes much longer to produce and is highly valued for its rarity and healing properties. Visiting this place felt magical, and I would gladly return to Maní just to experience it again and bring home more of this...

If you are coming to Mani you must visit here. Luis is so kind and spent nearly two hours showing us the process, explaining the deep history of bee keeping in Yucatan and sharing with us his life on his property. He is, by his account, the first in the region that brought back the ancient tradition of bee keeping following Mayan practices. We were amazed at the variety of flavors that the bees produce after he allowed us a few samples from various stages in the process. The tour itself was free and all in Spanish and at the end we were able to purchase Luis products. Highly recommend visiting especially if you speak Spanish as the history and process are great to...

Had a great time here learning about the Mayan bees and their magical honey. I’m not sure if I believe all the mystical healing properties, but the taste is very mild and not too sweet but the floral aroma is distinct and unique to this area because of the flowers the bees collect from.

A must stop on any yucatan roadtrip. It’s wonderful to learn about the native bees, their conservation process, and how the honey and derivants can be properly extracted. The visit is absolutely wonderful and you can buy honey, polen, and propoleo to take home. Very recommended!
