This is the most valuable National Park in Montenegro. It is among the oldest protected areas in the world. Just a few years after the Yellowstone was declared the National park in US, king Nicolas the First declared "Zabran" - forbidden land - stating that none shall endanger this protected piece of land in Montenegro. This was among the first ecological decisions made by a ruler in the world. That means that since the 19th century here was forbidden to hunt wild animals, fish in the lake and cut trees.
Some of the trees are among the tallest in this part of the Europe. This is among the only rainforests left in the world.
Nature is intact. Beautiful in it's wilderness. I highly recommend taking a walk around the lake. You don't need and equipment. There are a lots of benches and tables for picnic and for you to rest.
You should visit the national restaurant near the lake. It has amazing foods.
I highly recommend renting a boat. You can enjoy the views that you might miss when taking a walk.
You can camp, you can barbecue for free. You can also swim in late August when the water is warm and temperatures are high. Just check that with park's rangers.
You must visit this marvelous place. Anytime you want! It will leave you breathless in autumn. I live here and each time I come I appreciate this pearl of my...
Read moreBoth beautiful & disappointing. We arrived before midday and it was wonderful: quite & peaceful, we walked around the lake in the forest, which is absolutely beautiful with its old trees, different fungi and bird species. Then we arrived back to the visitor center early afternoon and it was a totally different place. It got crowded, which wouldn't be a problem itself, but the firepit was rented out by some teenagers and they were throwing an actual party there, with really loud music & singing, which we could all hear from the other side of the lake, so that ruined the whole atmosphere. We really did not understand why is that type of activity allowed in such a place? It was awful, like a cheap Labor Day picnic in one of Europe's oldest forests, a virgin rainforest, which is supposed to be untouched. Also they were cleaning the forest trail with a leaf blower, which seems pointless... If someone is interested in the nature I recommend going of season...
Read moreAmazing, almost untouched nature. Go through the forest and around the lake in an easy hour long walk, or challenge yourself by hiking to the katun (hearders' summer village) along a steep virgin forest path - the amazing, homemade food at the end is worth it! You could also rent a boat (8EUR for one hour, max 4 people on board) so you can see all parts of the like close and personal. A dip in the lake is great, but be mindful of the fact that the water can be very cold, even in the heat of the summer. Finally, starting this year, the restaurant is open. Compared to the prices of Kolašin and neighboring areas, you might find that the food is somewhat pricier. However, the quality is superb - I recommend Kačamak (potato ans corn flour mash with locally made cheese and cream) and the peasant's meat (viel in a paprika based sauce with potatoes...
