Black Lake, located near the ski town of Žabljak, is a must-visit destination for nature lovers. The lake is surrounded by a dense forest and the majestic peaks of the Durmitor Mountains, creating an unforgettable backdrop. The entrance fee is 5€ per person (children enter for free), and there is parking available for 2-3€ per hour. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from the busy city, this place offers a perfect retreat with fresh mountain air and scenic views.

The hike from the parking area to the lake takes about 10-15 minutes along a well-paved path, and you can explore several marked hiking trails around the lake and into the surrounding forest. The entire loop around the lake is around 3 kilometers and takes about 1.5-2 hours to walk at a relaxed pace, offering plenty of opportunities to enjoy the views and take stunning photos.

For those who enjoy outdoor activities, there’s plenty to do here. You can rent a boat for 8€ per hour, go for a swim in the clear water (though it’s quite cold), or simply relax by the shore. There’s also a workout area and a free drinking water source nearby. You’ll find a few restaurants and souvenir shops along the way, with reasonably priced meals and local products such as honey and liqueurs.

Be aware of the cooler temperatures compared to the coast—bring a jacket, especially in the early morning or late evening, as the temperature can drop significantly. In peak season, the area can get crowded, but if you visit early in the day, you’ll have a more tranquil experience.

TO YOU, responsible and sensitive traveler – PLEASE READ THIS! The lake is beautiful, but it's the most touristy spot in the area. We really recommend exploring other, less-visited places that still reflect the wild and authentic soul of Montenegro.

🆘 But be prepared: there are many stray animals around, and sadly, many are in very poor condition. Still, we travelers can make a difference! Let’s talk about it and spread awareness!

We are conservation biologists, and we reported the issue both to a local restaurant (they laughed at us) and to the National Park (which shamefully never replied). But this should not stop us. Every person who finds the courage to raise the issue can help change things, step by step.

We also learned that, before the tourist season, there are sometimes culling campaigns to deal with the stray animal situation. This is absolutely not the way to solve the problem. What is really needed is a long-term sterilization program. We even suggested to the National Park that they could invest part of the ticket income into neutering campaigns – after all, a National Park should care about all wildlife, domestic and wild.
