The Mahamuni Buddha Temple (Burmese: မဟာမုနိဘုရားကြီး, Burmese pronunciation: [məhà mṵnḭ pʰəjádʑí]; also called the Mahamuni Pagoda) is a Buddhist temple and major pilgrimage site, located southwest of Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma) (Myanmar).[1] The Mahamuni Buddha image (literal meaning: The Great Sage) is deified in this temple, and originally came from Arakan.[2] It is highly venerated in Burma and central to many people's lives, as it is seen as an expression of representing the Buddha's life.[3] Ancient tradition refers to only five likenesses of the Buddha, made during his lifetime; two were in India, two in paradise, and the fifth is the Mahamuni Buddha image in Myanmar.[1][2][4][5][6] According to the legend, the Buddha visited the Dhanyawadi city of Arakan in 554 BC.[1] King Sanda Thuriya requested that an image was cast of him. After casting the Great Image, the Buddha breathed upon it, and thereafter the image became the exact likeness of the Mahamuni.

This is one of the must visit places in mandalay. It is also known as Paya Gyi. It is one of the most sacred places around there. The Buddha statue was made by bronze and covered with gold plating. But it has become very think in gold that you can't properly see the Buddha statue. People who wear pants are not allowed to go inside the pagoda, you have to wear the traditional dress called longyi. Don't worry, they will give you that. But the women aren't allowed to go into the chamber where the statue is kept, although they're allowed to go into the pagoda. If you want to catch something special, go there at four thirty in the morning and you'll see the monks washing the face and brushing the teeth of the statue. And they do it everyday so feel free to go.

This is an amazing temple to be in. There is a K5000 entrance fee for foreigners. This temple has got so much gold in it's interior and exterior that it looks so magnificent. Here, you get to witness devout worshippers apply gold leaf on the buddha statue. There's a video live stream as well as women are not allowed near it. There's also a bronze statue museum on-site with English explanations and an art gallery which details the faith in Myanmar. Would definitely recommend a visit here.

Nice temple with various shops all around it. Key attraction there is the buddha inside, where many people queue to go see and get close to it. Note that foreign tourists have to pay a MMK1,000 camera fee at the entrance to be able to take photos. Female visitors as well as Male visitors not adequately dressed are also not allowed inside the buddha circle but they can get a good view from not far. Furthermore, there is a live TV stream of the buddha for those unable to get too near.

This is very famous pagoda in Mandalay city. Most people come to see the budda which is now very big due to gold leafs. The Mahamuni buddha is over 12 feet tall and is gold coated. It is the main attraction but there are others which include mural and historical paintings, stone inscriptions, bronze statues, traditional handicrafts, a library and a drum tower. Only men are allowed in the most sacred part inside but there is a video screen where you can see the inner sanctum.
