Visiting Rembrandt Hoeve is like stepping into a parallel universe where cheese and clogs reign supreme. This quirky little gem outside Amsterdam offers a delightfully odd experience that somehow works perfectly.
From the moment you arrive, you’re greeted by the distinct aroma of freshly made cheese mingling with the earthy scent of handcrafted wooden clogs. The staff, dressed in traditional Dutch attire, guide you through the cheese-making process with such enthusiasm you’d think they were revealing the secrets of the universe. And maybe they are—because the cheese here is simply out of this world!
The clog-making demonstration is equally fascinating. Watching a block of wood transform into a wearable work of art feels oddly mesmerizing. Before you know it, you’ll be tempted to try on a pair and ponder whether clogs could become your new fashion statement.
What really sets Rembrandt Hoeve apart is its unique charm. It’s part farm, part artisan workshop, and part whimsical time machine. Whether you’re tasting their Gouda or marveling at the craftsmanship of clogs, it’s an experience that’s delightfully offbeat and unexpectedly unforgettable.
In short, if you’re looking for a weirdly wonderful detour from the typical tourist path, Rembrandt Hoeve is a place you won’t soon forget. Just be prepared—you might leave with a suitcase full of cheese and a newfound...
Read moreSkip the factory cheese shops in Amsterdam, rent a bike, and have a ride to Rembrandthoeve! You'll see not just the cheese being made (by hand!) here but also a classic wooden shoe manufacturing operation using manual equipment.
The facility is set up for group tours, but we arrived by bike and were given the same first-class, enthusiastic welcome that a larger group would. (Don't be afraid to poke your head in and say "Hi" if you arrive unexpected... this is a small, family operation and they may be busy making cheese or clogs, but will be happy to welcome you.)
I particularly recommend the Smoked Gouda, but the other cheeses were excellent, too... and if you're looking for genuine, hand-made, Dutch wooden shoes, you'll find a wide selection here produced using...
Read moreExcellent stop, in fact, one of the highlights of our whole trip! The owner and his personality make the entire visit memorable and hilarious. He’s definitely an entertainer for his guests, but also the cheese maker and the shoemaker when nobody is touring. Truly a hole-in-the-wall kind of place, oozing of authenticity and hard work. They don’t even ask for donations, which I think they should since that was the most entertaining tour we’ve had! We stopped without an appointment and caught a group that we joined for the demonstrations. You get to see where they make cheese and then where they make the wooden shoes. Then there’s a gift shop where you can buy these items. Definitely...
