The Hunua Ranges cover about 400 square kilometres along the south eastern side of the Auckland region. Most of the area lies within the Waharau Regional Park, which has more than 450 species of native plants.

Hiking tracks in the park pass through dense native forests to high ridge lines that offer long range views to the city or the Firth of Thames.

One of the popular shorter walks is to the impressive Hunua Falls. Swimming holes in the numerous streams and rivers offer a refreshing break on a more challenging hike.

More information Several camping areas, equipped with the basic necessities, provide scenic accommodation. Bookings are through Auckland Regional Council. Mountain bikers are welcomed in the ranges and some exciting trails have been built by biking enthusiasts working with the regional council. Both the Mangatawhiri and the Mangatangi dams offer rainbow trout fishing along the face of the dams. Waitakere Ranges Before you go… Kauri is part of New Zealand’s heritage. One of the most interesting, exciting, and beautiful places to visit features a dam, a campground, diverse bird species, a suspension loop bridge, and excellent hiking trails. The dam offers stunning views and serves as a striking landmark within the area. The nearby campground provides a perfect base for outdoor adventures, with facilities that cater to both tent campers and those with RVs.

Bird watchers will be thrilled by the variety of bird species that can be spotted in the area, making it a prime location for birding. The suspension loop bridge not only offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape but also adds a sense of adventure to the experience. Hikers will find a range of trails suitable for all skill levels, from easy walks to challenging treks that reward with panoramic vistas.

Amazing 3 hours walk. We finished in 3 hours 40 mins including food/ water breaks. Approx 45 kms away from cbd. After the motorway exit, it's mostly 50 and 80 roads. From hunua till the spot, roads get real narrow and curvy, so be careful when you drive.

There are ample of parking spaces but being a popular spot they are mostly full. We had to wait for few mins to get one.

It's a well maintained reserve. Though council mentions 8.3 kms, by the time we finished cossey Massey loop it was close to 11 kms. Go with enough water and food to refresh yourself. There are steep climbs and steps at many places. So average fitness required. Walk upto Cossey dam will take close to 1.5 hours and after that it's mostly downhill. Enough signs to lead you and well maintained tracks.

Great place for taking pics. Beautiful waterfall towards the end...
