Adults will find this well worth a visit and the $10 entry fee. Fyffe House opens at 10:00 am. Allow at least 40 minutes for your visit. . There's a lot of reading to be done about historical information. I've given this rating 4/5 rather than full marks. The constant signs on every display asking you not to touch items is unnecessary. Many of the information panels have spelling and grammatical errors. There is no visitor toilet. Children wouldn't find this overly interesting. The wonderful grassed area outside could be developed a little to include something for children. We walked up Tom's track to Scarborough Street on the top of the peninsula. Then we walked along to the end of the peninsula to Ward Street. You can climb a stile and walk down through the sheep paddock to lower Ward Street. The walkway is marked. Then walk along the beach road to Fyffe House. It ends up being a big circle walk with Fyffe House as the...

This is a definite "must see" when visiting Kaikoura. Whaea Shell is the loveliest, & most welcoming hostess with an incredible wealth of knowledge of the local history, people, wildlife & region. Her warmth, genuineness, & service is unmatched in our opinion. Have a game of throwing horse shoes on the most picturesque front lawn in New Zealand, sit & learn about the origins of the area's first inhabitants, get the kids to research information (they win a prize) Throw an original harpoon, & have a good look around the gift shop, you may find a neat little keepsake to take home. Absolutely loved our 2 hours we spent learning & exploring this beuatifully kept piece...

This is one of the hidden gems of New Zealand. I must warn that it is not a location for somebody who is looking for a cookie cutter experience. This is a genuine whale hunter house. Though the hunting has stopped in 1964, the house still feels as if the owners has never left it. You will learn an abundance of fascinating stories, such as the foundation being made of actual whale bones, which you can see and touch! As if the house itself wasn’t a great reason to visit it, the lady who runs the place has THE best souvenir shop in the region. Everything is ocean themed, great quality and unbeatable price. We sometimes stop at Kaikoura just to get souvenirs...

Such a wee gem! I have driven past to the seafood caravan many times, and wish I had popped in earlier! I spent about an hour going through from the foundations made of whale vertebrae, the beautiful wildflower garden, to the original Coopers Cottage. There was a fantastic overview of the history of local Maori from Maui to just pre-European times; alongside the Fyfe cousins and additional European families who have occupied the site. The grounds are worth a little look around - take time to see the Pou, the “dinghy”, original foundations from the Pier Hotel and chat to the knowledgeable friendly staff.

The place is a must visit which explains the history of Kaikoura & Fyfee. The building itself is a worth visit with its history. The entry fee for students is $5 & $10 for others. Shelly, the main coordinator at the reception, received us with a warm welcome and explained to us the history of kaikoura and Fyffe. The coordinators in there are so friendly.
