Adults will find this well worth a visit and the $10 entry fee. Fyffe House opens at 10:00 am. Allow at least 40 minutes for your visit. . There's a lot of reading to be done about historical information. I've given this rating 4/5 rather than full marks. The constant signs on every display asking you not to touch items is unnecessary. Many of the information panels have spelling and grammatical errors. There is no visitor toilet. Children wouldn't find this overly interesting. The wonderful grassed area outside could be developed a little to include something for children. We walked up Tom's track to Scarborough Street on the top of the peninsula. Whaea Shell is the loveliest, & most welcoming hostess with an incredible wealth of knowledge of the local history, people, wildlife & region. Her warmth, genuineness, & service is unmatched in our opinion. Have a game of throwing horse shoes on the most picturesque front lawn in New Zealand, sit & learn about the origins of the area's first inhabitants, get the kids to research information (they win a prize) Throw an original harpoon, & have a good look around the gift shop, you may find a neat little keepsake to take home. Absolutely loved our 2 hours we spent learning & exploring this beuatifully kept piece...
Read moreThis is one of the hidden gems of New Zealand. I must warn that it is not a location for somebody who is looking for a cookie cutter experience. This is a genuine whale hunter house. Though the hunting has stopped in 1964, the house still feels as if the owners has never left it. You will learn an abundance of fascinating stories, such as the foundation being made of actual whale bones, which you can see and touch! As if the house itself wasn’t a great reason to visit it, the lady who runs the place has THE best souvenir shop in the region. Everything is ocean themed, great quality and unbeatable price. We sometimes stop at Kaikoura just to get souvenirs...
