Matapōuri, situated on the Tūtūkākā Coast, is a rural settlement with 207 inhabitants according to the 2023 census. Location is approximately thirty-six kilometres northeast of Whangārei city. Famous for its golden sands and sheltered estuary, Matapōuri is a family-friendly beach for safe swimming and boogie boarding. Also ideal for snorkelling, surfing, and fishing.

For keen trampers, the walk over the hill to Whale Bay is highly recommended. Puriri, pohutukawa and kowhai trees can be seen on the linked headland walkways between Whale Bay and Matapōuri. Headland Track, Morrison Reserve and Track Ridge are other popular walking tracks. However, be aware of rough terrains and steep drops on some of these tracks so tracking boots are ideally more suitable than walking shoes.

Matapōuri village has a small shop selling ice cream and fish n chips. There is a fairly big car park with a toilet facility, street parking also possible. Dogs are prohibited almost everywhere - on the beach, walkway, estuary, upstream of both bridges, on conservation land at the northern end of beach and in...

Well when you come down here in November as the weather starts to get just warm enough to chill or walk along the beach in the noon day sun, this is the most picturesque one in the area that I've seen so far w the rock outcroppings on both of the round ends. When low tide, looks like can walk quite a way around the edge of those rocks. Either way, enjoy the sands, dogs all welcome, and there's some bbqs and toilets at...

Beauuuuutiful!! Nice parking just next to the beach. Can have a lunch with a view. Also 2/3 self contained van camping spots, would recommend to stay there if you have enough time and there is place available. Very clean and nice beach. There is small shop nearby too - for ice cream or same food. To get there road is up and downhills, but...

One of the best beaches I've ever been to! Absolutely gorgeous with clear water and soft sand. It was busy when I went, but there was lots of room (and if you're willing to walk a bit you can get to a quieter part of the beach). I drove up for the day from Auckland (3hours+) and would definitely do that again on a nice day!
