A beautiful falls, only a short walk from the road. There is a viewing platform above the falls, as well as a path that leads down to them. Once you arrive at the bottom the falls, some climbing over rocks may be required to get as close as you like, especially if you want to swim in the waters.

The water is quite cold, even in summer, so be wary if you wish to swim. It also seems to be quite dangerous. Rocks all around (some quite slippery), the heavy falls above, and rapids flowing out of the pool. I wouldn't recommend swimming here unless you are extremely keen, and confident in swimming in these sorts of environments.

The falls themselves are quite a sight, and the area surrounding them is great for photos.

Now, for the Lord of the Rings fans. I'm still not 100% sure if this area was used in the movies as Henneth Annûn. At some angles, I can see the similarity, especially from above. But, if it was used, I suspect it was compiled with some sets, CGI extensions and/or other locations mixed in. I may return to this review after re-watching to confirm my suspicions. Regardless, it is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area, as you may be heading to Whakapapa to see the Mordor area. The journey from road to falls is a short walk, and a worthy detour whether it was...

This gorgeous pool is a filming location for Lord of the Rings. Read on for detail!

The scene filmed here appears in The Two Towers film, about halfway through. Gollum is fishing in the ‘Forbidden Pool’ (a hiding place for the Rangers of Ithilien whose secrecy is such that finding it is punishable by death). Gollum is found in the pool by Faramir. Faramir brings Frodo to see, then asks whether his archers should fire on Gollum.

See the photo to recognise the similarities! There is now foliage around the falls, which stops us matching rock formations between the movie and real-life. Yet, the scene is still powerfully evoked when stepping down into the location.

Please note that this location is used for the ground-level frames only. The aerial shots were taken at Mangawhero Falls, which are also in Tongariro National Park.

In conclusion, this is a brilliant place. It’s easy to imagine Gollum splashing around and singing. Yet, even those unfamiliar with the films will enjoy this beautiful,...

Tawhai Falls (Gollum's Pool) is a beautiful waterfall in Tongariro National Park, famous for being the location of the forbidden pool scene in Lord of the Rings. The walk to the waterfall is very short and easy, only 15 minutes from the car park. The track is well-formed and has some stairs to go up and down.

The waterfall is stunning, with clear blue water and a rocky backdrop. You can view it from the top or scramble down to the bottom for a closer look. The pool is deep enough for swimming, but very cold. You might feel like Gollum fishing for fish, or Frodo and Faramir watching him.

Tawhai Falls (Gollum's Pool) is a must-see attraction for any Lord of the Rings fan or nature lover. It's a great way to enjoy the beauty and diversity of Tongariro National Park. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to have a memorable experience in...
