The Three Sisters and Elephant Rock at Clifton Road in Tongapōrutu offer a striking glimpse into New Zealand’s ever-changing coastal landscapes. These dramatic sea stacks, standing 25 meters tall, have been carved over millennia by the relentless Tasman Sea, with their forms shifting as erosion claims them piece by piece.

Once part of a quartet of β€œsisters” at the turn of the century, only two remain today, alongside the remnants of Elephant Rock, which lost its trunk-like arch to a storm in 2016. The area’s dynamic geology means the formations might appear different with each visit, as waves and weather continue reshaping the cliffs and beaches.

Accessing the site requires timing your visit with low tide, when the Tongapōrutu River mouth becomes crossable, allowing you to walk the black-sand beach and approach the towering rock pillars up close. Nearby caves hide a curious Māori rock drawing of a six-toed foot, adding a layer of cultural intrigue to the natural spectacle.

For panoramic views, Pilot Road lookout north of the bridge provides a sweeping vantage point, while Clifton Road leads to the beachside trailhead. Sturdy footwear is essential for navigating the uneven terrain, and checking tide tables beforehand ensures safety against rapidly rising waters.

The rugged beauty here is complemented by the region’s rich Māori heritage, with the formations regarded as taonga (treasures) symbolizing the deep connection between land and people. Visitors often linger to photograph the interplay of light on the cliffs during sunset or explore tidal pools teeming with marine life.

Though parking is available near Clifton Road, facilities are minimal, so bringing supplies is wise. This site remains a testament to nature’s artistryβ€”ephemeral yet awe-inspiring, inviting reflection on both the power of the elements and the impermanence of even the grandest...

I had the pleasure of visiting Three Sisters and Elephant Rock in New Zealand, and it was truly a sight to behold. The natural rock formations and stunning coastal views are simply breathtaking. Both sites offer fantastic photo opportunities, and the overall experience is well worth the visit.

The Three Sisters are a trio of towering rock formations that have been shaped by years of ocean erosion. The rugged cliffs and teal blue waters create a mesmerizing contrast that is simply unforgettable. Elephant Rock, on the other hand, is a unique rock formation that looks like an elephant raising its trunk towards the sky. It's a great spot for taking fun photos and enjoying the surrounding natural beauty.

Overall, I highly recommend visiting Three Sisters and Elephant Rock if you're in New Zealand. It's an easy hike to get up close to these natural wonders, and the scenery is absolutely stunning. A true must-see for any nature lover...

I can't give a 5 cause it's always high tide so I've never actually seen the sister and her half sibling . The sand flies were nuts here they left me quite the itchy prezzie. It is a very beautiful place though.. My biggest Dislike about it, is the discrimination against Tent Campers, Please give me a logical decent reason why you have a place with toilets, a place to dispose rubbish yet You DONT allow all freedom Campers to sleep a night to. I had walked All over Mount Messenger, and was on my Forth Day Walking Towards Te kuiti. I was excited to sleep here then I saw The Discriminating Sign No tents allowed only self contained vehicles.

What happened to New Zealand and Our Rights To Camp. For that I won't give This Beautiful spot 5 stars.

I did meet two very kind Campers, one bless her charged my phone and power bank. And thee other gave me a ride to Te kuiti as I had no reason...
