Visiting Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland in Rotorua, New Zealand, was like stepping into another world! 🌋 As soon as I arrived, I was greeted by the vibrant colors and the distinct smell of sulfur. The Lady Knox Geyser was an absolute marvel, erupting precisely at 10:15 am. It's fascinating to watch this natural spectacle unfold with water shooting up to 20 meters high. Walking through the park, I was mesmerized by the Champagne Pool. Its bubbling orange and green waters are truly otherworldly. 🥂 The contrast of colors and the constant steam rising from the pool made for some incredible photos. Don't forget your camera because every corner of this place is Instagram-worthy! One of the highlights was the Artist's Palette, a large area of multicolored hot and cold pools. The colors are so vivid, ranging from deep oranges to bright yellows, creating a striking natural mosaic. 🎨 The boardwalks make it easy to navigate, and there are plenty of informational signs explaining the geological phenomena at play. The Mud Pool was a fun stop, with bubbling mud that looked almost like a witch's cauldron. 🪄 It's fascinating to see the earth in such an active state, and it's a reminder of the powerful geothermal forces at work beneath our feet. Overall, Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Rotorua. It offers a unique and awe-inspiring experience that you won't find anywhere else. 🗺️ The combination of vibrant colors, geothermal activity, and well-maintained paths makes it a perfect destination for nature lovers and photographers alike. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is a geothermal attraction located in the Taupo Volcanic Zone of New Zealand. Known for its colorful hot springs, boiling mud pools, and geysers, it offers a unique natural landscape shaped by geothermal activity. Some of the key features include: 1. Champagne Pool: This is the most famous and photographed feature of Wai-O-Tapu. It’s a large hot spring with a vibrant orange edge due to deposits of arsenic and antimony sulfide. The pool emits carbon dioxide gas, causing it to bubble like champagne. 2. Artist's Palette: This area is characterized by a variety of colors caused by mineral deposits. The different hues are created by sulfur (yellow), iron oxides (red and brown), and other mineral compounds. 3. Lady Knox Geyser: This geyser erupts daily, reaching heights of up to 20 meters. The eruptions are triggered by adding soap, which breaks the surface tension and causes a spectacular spout. 4. Devil's Bath: A bright green pool caused by high levels of sulfur and ferrous salts. Its color can vary from green to yellow depending on the mineral content and lighting conditions. 5. Mud Pools: These boiling pools of mud are a fascinating aspect of the geothermal activity in the area. The mud is heated by underlying geothermal activity, causing it to bubble and spurt. The area also has well-maintained walking tracks and informative signage, making it accessible for visitors to explore and learn about geothermal activity.

Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland offers a fascinating blend of natural wonder and curated spectacle. While the Lady Knox Geyser's eruption is initiated by staff through the addition of soap, the informative pre-eruption talk adds a pleasant touch, albeit leaving some visitors with a sense of scepticism. Nevertheless, the park itself is a marvel to behold, with its captivating display of boiling sulfur, mud, and uniquely hued liquids, offering a mix of awe and trepidation. The park's walking trails provide flexibility, allowing visitors to tailor their experience to their preferences. The paths are well-maintained, clearly signposted, and offer options for both leisurely strolls and more extensive explorations. With minimal elevation changes, the longest route typically takes around 90 minutes, including stops for photography and relaxation. Onsite amenities include a café, though the quality of the coffee may leave something to be desired, with offerings falling within the realm of average. Nonetheless, Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland remains a captivating destination for those seeking a blend of natural beauty and curated experiences, offering an accessible and intriguing glimpse into New Zealand's geothermal wonders.

If you are after some geothermal activity, Waiotapu is a good place to spot it. The Lady Knox Geyser goes off once a day at 10.15(ish)AM. Get there early to get a good view. Buy your tickets at the Waiotapu entrance and visitor centre, before driving a few hundred metres to the Geyser entrance. Afterwards you drive back up to the visitor centre to enter Waiotapu. Be prepared for sun and heat! Don't forget the sunblock or your water bottle if it is a warm day as the geothermal activity makes the temperature higher! There are three walks you can complete with gorgeous views everywhere. Walk one is the most accessible, while walk three has the most stairs! The cafe is very small - an opportunity missed we thought. While a small amount of the usual sort (pies and sandwiches, slices and muffins) are available there was no menu food available. Cold drinks and hot drinks were available and there was good seating, indoor and outdoor. Parking is plentiful and there are wardens at peak time to help direct you to the nearest available park. Toilets are at the visitor centre, so go before you head out for the walk!

This is definitely a place that you would like to see. Or at least one of these two in the area. I personally visited this one only, as I have heard that they are very similar. The place itself is a walk for few hours. I recommend to bring a lot of water with you, or at least empty bottles, as it's possible to refill them at the entrance to the thermal area. The toilets are at the entrance to the thermal area only, so keep this in mind. Not all the places are that colorful that the main picture - it's actually just a few of them. The geyser demonstration was extremely crowded and not so wow, as I had expected. Unless you are too much into it, I recommend to only visit the main part of the thermal area. What I didn't like were the queues at the cash desks. For some reason, the desk for the online orders was even slower than the desk where the visitor could have bought the tickets on the spot. I waited about 30 minutes just to get my online ticket validated. Parking at the place is very nicely organized and the staff working at the place is in general very nice.
