Do the farmland first walking toward the beach, that way you get any sand blowing on your back rather than in your face. Was given that wonderful tip by the guide at Farewell Spit Eco Tours! I needed to do a morning walk and their tours are arranged around the tide times (guessing as you’ll be able to walk further out on low tide). For the hilltop walk it can be tricky to always spot the track back but keep an eye on all the red posts and you’ll be golden! Google maps is also super accurate for this route so keep a downloaded map or a screenshot. Very good sign at the car park for all the information on walk options.

Awesome walk over the hills starting at Wharariki Beach, over the hills to Cape Farewell and on to Pillar Point lighthouse. Although a track as such is not always defined there are markers along the way to keep you heading in the right spot. After we got to the lighthouse, rather than continuing to Puponga, we just retraced our steps and went back down to Cape Farewell where we could then walk the gravel road back to our campsite at Wharariki Beach. Fantastic views all along the way. Can see Farewell Spit when you reach the lighthouse.

Not sure if we got there the wrong time of the day/ year or what, but the beach was not in a state where you want to spend a couple of hours walking on. We walked ~15min and decided to move on. Most people just turned back and walked away. Shame...

The walk up to Pillar point (the parking lot right before Cape Farewell) is one of the most gorgeous walks I have ever been on. You go up the hill then continue ~15 min past the structure on the top and come to a lookout from which you can see all of Golden Bay and Farewell Split....
