Do the farmland first walking toward the beach, that way you get any sand blowing on your back rather than in your face. Was given that wonderful tip by the guide at Farewell Spit Eco Tours! I needed to do a morning walk and their tours are arranged around the tide times (guessing as you’ll be able to walk further out on low tide). For the hilltop walk it can be tricky to always spot the track back but keep an eye on all the red posts and you’ll be golden! Read moreAwesome walk over the hills starting at Wharariki Beach, over the hills to Cape Farewell and on to Pillar Point lighthouse. Although a track as such is not always defined there are markers along the way to keep you heading in the right spot. After we got to the lighthouse, rather than continuing to Puponga, we just retraced our steps and went back down to Cape Farewell where we could then walk the gravel road back to our campsite at Wharariki Beach.
