This little stretch of coastline really does have yellow-eyed penguins crossing the beach each evening after 3pm. My uncle used to care for them - what a loving chore Uncle Jim... thank you for all you've done! However you won't see any in my pics because ever the fresh pic hunter, I figured they'd have to go back out to sea in the morning and I'd get that pic!? Unfortunately for me, their alarm went off earlier than mine so...stick to the after 3pm and please STAY OFF THE BEACH... they'll see you, you'll scare them, and they won't come...

A reminder to please DO NOT go onto the beach after 3pm - we saw a few inconsiderate tourists taking selfies on the beach while a few groups of us were up on the deck waiting for a sighting.

We came at dusk and waited for an hour and a half but didn’t see any penguins unfortunately - they are known to be very shy and might have been scared off by the idiots on the beach! It was a beautiful spot to watch the sunset anyhow but the inconsiderate people made me so...

Nice place not too far off from the Oamaru town. Just a short walk from the car park to the spot where you can (attempt to) see the penguins. Bring binoculars for the best view. When I arrived there were heaps of backpackers just sitting all over the viewing deck windows when they were supposed to be discreet. Left after a while as I was just looking into the back of their heads and hearing them chatter away. Hopefully my next visit...

As the signs from DOC says, the penguins change their feathers from March until May, which makes it harder for you to see them leaving their nests and coming back as they are not waterproof and won't leave out to the sea at all. We will definitely come back later in the year because it seems like a cool spot to watch penguins. The beach is a bit far away so you will need binoculars to see them better. :)
