Mission whiskey tango foxtrot
Apologies for the long unneeded story but come with me and enjoy the ride.
I was visiting lake Taupo for New Year’s Eve, great place - do come. I told my brother (who lives in australia with me) that I was here and he immediately said, “ my guy, please go get me this honey whiskey from this honey shop while you’re there… it’s the best I’ve ever had” best he’s ever had hey? well I gotta go try this whiskay. Immediate failure, holiday times and limited vehicles made it impossible for me to access the sweet nectar before I had to fly home.. so close … so far.
Back home in Perth, empty handed and parched I stared at my old crystallised honey squeeze bottle in anger. Then I saw it, the invitation to a wedding on my fridge held up by a free magnet for a local plumber… location - Lake Taupo… What were the chances?.. fate beckons. We are getting the old team back together (just me, no one else cared about this mission).
A month later I was back in Taupo…A MONTH?! Why didn’t we just stay in New Zealand you ask?!? Shush your lips that’s why! My work spread sheets weren’t going to spread themselves. Had to work for that liquid gold and now i had another chance! Immediate failure…Two red eye flights and a late wedding party later I now had the motor skills of a tree stump, I couldn’t get to huka honey.. I was thrown in a plane before I could recover, but this time I learned from my mistakes, I had planned to loiter in New Zealand for a little longer post Taupo visit.
I arrived in Queenstown and schemed a scheme so schemey I couldn’t fail! Driving, I was gonna drive there, in a van - my flight back to Perth was from Auckland so it’s on the way anyway…we enjoyed ourselves on the adventure north, oh man you gotta go check out stream cave on Arthur’s pass it was sick, totally gonna go review that after this. My last chance was fast approaching, we flew out early on the 5th from Auckland and our ferry to the north island was on the morning of the 4th so that was our only chance…. 530 wake up, 630 on the ferry, 11 land ahoy in wello. We had 6 hours to get to Huka honey hive before it shut and crushed my dreams forever. We drove as fast as the van could muster 60km/h up hills until we pulled into huka at 430 pm… third times the charm!
So great place to visit with the family, great for kids, lots of informative areas and Bee related things to play with. Please try the mead and the whiskey, both are great. We had great help from the staff there, she really knew her honey drinks and made the choice very easy, thank you!
There was actually two whiskeys and I had no idea which one my brother wanted, he didn’t respond to messages so I just picked the one I liked, fingers crossed lol
I now realise there are other honey hives that sell this whiskey we could have gone to SMDH but oh well what a journey! We also refilled our water bottles there, great water, would...
