Refreshed we left and headed North, then West again across the Coromondel, heading now to the Coromondel township, for some more dirt road fun. This time we stopped at the Waiau Kauri grove where there was yet more pathways and platforms for us to traverse, and trees to be seen. Was persuaded to take a few pictures of some mosses. Am hoping some will look like forests photographed from above.
We continued down the road, ignoring the water falls, we had seen enough and there are some good falls coming up in the days to come. Read moreThese are a great example of mature Kauri trees and they are very easy to access from the road. There is a gravel carpark to park in. Most of the 309 road is gravel though. Doc has installed a good cleaning station for preventing the spread of Kauri die back disease which is spread to the roots of the trees on your footwear so it us important to clean off soil and then use disinfectant station on entry and exit, it is simple and easy. We parked to see the kauri grove, when walking out of the carpark a seedy guy in a white rundown 4WD pulled up saying we parked on “private property” and it was “his carpark” and we need to “pay $5 to park there”. He got aggressive and started swearing when we refused, we felt unsafe so we got back into our car and left.
