An absolute must see - either if you have any interest at all in this essential part of Norway’s history, development and transportation OR if you just want to experience one of the most fantastic museum experiences! A ship in a bottle!! (Well in an amazing glass walled building!). One man’s dream has turned into one of the ‘must sees’ in Norway. Absolute superb presentation & information provision, with wonderfully passionate & helpful staff. What is also amazing about the museum is that 1 in 4 of the island’s population have annual tickets so it has also started to become the community hub, especially with it’s evocative coffee shop & cafe on board the ship itself. And no you can’t possibly do it justice if you only have 45 minutes in port! The last few reviews seem to miss the point. This would be a wonderful sight to see (a huge vessel in an amazing building) for even 5 minutes but you really need 2-3 hours to take in the whole story. And, to correct the last reviewer, every information board is in Norwegian, English AND German. It was an inspired move to encase this beautifully restored vessel in glass & huge thanks must be given to the dreamers & tenacious persisters who have made this possible - and the amazing team of volunteers who still turn up every day to keep everything ship...

We visited the Norwegian Coastal Museum during our cruise from Kirkiness to Bergen, so it was very interesting to compare our 2021 liner with a much older one presented in the museum.

The concept of having a ship under a glass roof is great - you can see it both inside and outside regardless of the weather conditions and time of the year.

Overall an impressive machine for its time made us appreciate technological advancements made during the last 100 years.

You can see different types of rooms available to travelers as well as kitchens, restaurants, facilities, etc.

Some places could be cramped and stuffy - make sure your health condition is ok with that.

Next to the baggage section there is a small cinema, which many people might miss.

It took us around 30 mins to quickly go through the ship. I enjoyed it, my other half preferred visiting the gift shop when the corridors became too narrow...

The Hurtigruten Museum in Stokmarknes is a fascinating experience for anyone interested in maritime history. This museum is unique because it's built around a complete former postal ship, allowing visitors to explore the entire vessel on foot. From the engine room to the passenger cabins and all the way up to the captain's bridge, you get a comprehensive look at life aboard one of these iconic ships.

In addition to the immersive ship tour, the museum offers a souvenir shop and an extensive collection of information about the history of postal shipping in Norway. It's a captivating journey through time and an excellent opportunity to learn about the vital role these ships played in connecting coastal communities. A must-visit for history enthusiasts and anyone intrigued by Norway's...

Excellent museum and a must do when you are in Norway, even if you are not a ship person. We have sailed on the Hurtigruten new and the old ships, so to be able to go around all of the 1956 built ship was amazing. We even managed to find the cabin in 3rd class where we had our first trip. There is a lot of information available on the ship and part of the steam ship lounges from early 1900s. They also give the story of how they saved the Finnmarken ship and the long process to build the stunning glass building that surrounds it.
