The entry fee is cheap (a mere 100 NOK) and last throughout the day, and gives access to both the exhibit and gildehall. The exhibit housed roughly 10 glass cases with items dug up from one of the mounds, some of which contained fairly impressive reconstructions. By the entrance into the museum there's a replica of one of the runestones located in Sweden. Anyone can take a stroll through the park, free of charge, and contains numerous mounds as well as a view of where there once used to be a large port. Unfortunately, there seemed to be little information about the mounds and their condition beside speculations. The gildehall is a large and impressive piece of art, surrounded by a palisade wall to keep the sound out, and I was fortunate to get to spend an hour talking with the host, who was dressed for the occasion, while she kept the fire lit and was making a basket out of straws. While the exhibit and information revolving the mounds was a bit lacking, it was well worth the visit to see the inside of the gildehall with my own eyes. The museum also has some nice trinkets that you...
Read moreWe checked Google in the morning to see if the museum was open on 19.10.2021. According to Google from 11 am. So we set off from Kungsham in Sweden via ferry across the Oslofjord. Arrived there, by now 12:30, it said everywhere that it was open. But nothing. We were standing in front of a closed door. The light was on. We rang the bell. No one opened. So we walked around the grounds once. Back at the museum, we rang the bell again, because according to Google and the local opening hours, it was open. A young man opened the door and told us that it was closed today and open again tomorrow. Great! 6 hours driving time in total, a whole day's holiday, 100 euros less for absolutely nothing. We cannot recommend this museum. The opening hours on Google are definitely not reliable. Neither are the opening hours on site. We will never know if the museum is worth it. If you could rate this place with 0...
Read moreMidgard vikingsenter is small but interesting museum is devoted to the well-known site in Borre. In the very nice building are exhibited finds (or their replicas) which were discovered in numerous archaeological excavations on the site in Borre. Moreover, several meters to the east from this building are reconstructed huge mounds in which were found artefacts (e.g. mounts of horse bridle, mount of harness, jewellery) covered with elaborated ornaments (e.g. gripping beasts, chains, knots).
Close to the museum building is reconstructed small stronghold. Behind stockade, is beautifully decorated longhouse and several small buildings. During festivals in Midgard vikingsenter in this place are presented numerous Viking Age crafts.
In my opinion Midgard vikingsenter and its close neighbourhood are very interesting places to...
