Allmannajuvet zinc mines offer a cool journey back in time!

A visit to the Allmannajuvet Zinc Mines is an absolute must-stop on the Ryfylke panoramic route! This disused mine (operational from 1881-1899) is now a fascinating historical landmark, housed in buildings designed with a striking industrial style by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor.

We took the guided tour, and our guide, Kaspar, was incredibly knowledgeable. He really made the history come alive, transporting us back 150 years to the operational days of the mine.

The tour itself is about 1.5 hours and the organization provides helmets with torches, but be warned: the mine is roughly 6°C and quite slippery! So, wear good shoes and a jacket!

After our tour, we were welcomed by the extremely friendly hostess at the café. A huge shout-out to her – she even safe-guarded my wallet which I'd forgotten before entering the mine! The homemade soup of the day (chicken soup with some fresh focaccia) and a fresh Norwegian waffle were absolutely delicious.

Practical Info: The café and gallery are open June 15 - August 17 (10:00-16:00). Guided tours run daily at 10:30 and 13:30. The admission is NOK 170 for adults. Seriously, try to time your visit for a tour; it's a unique experience! You can book tickets online or scan the QR code...

Personally I don't get it. But people seem to enjoy it. If these buildings by Zhuntor can bring some tourists to Sauda, it will benefit even the doubters. In any case I encourage everyone to go see the buildings. The current location on google map is wrong. The map points you to the old tourist information office wich has moved to the...
