Short version: Fairytale levels of beautiful surroundings, and all you need is 60 NOK for the facilitated parking right next to the trail and a magnificent waterfall. The rest is optional, but I wholly recommend the experience of both nature and hospitality that's relatively cheap on a Norwegian scale.
Long version: This place is the perfect outpost before doing a hike, either the easy one, or the harder trips, and they are both gorgeously sublime, showing off the best Western Norway can offer (and that is a tall bar to reach!).
I came to the reception simply to ask if the parking fee was omitted for diner guests, it was not :) but, 60kr blank for however much time I needed that day felt worth it.
So me and a couple of friends ordered food, and enquired about if we could light the fire in the cozy shelter and got an instant "of course!" As a reply. Moving on we were mind blown to learn the firewood and utilities were free of charge! Didn't even seem like it was dependant on us eating there. Extreme hospitality!
This totally changed my view about the place from a place with mediocre food (Meaning small standard menu of subpar quality but fairly enough priced, I won't waste words saying much more than don't expect a culinary masterpiece.).
What kind of tourist business offers a luxurious outdoor setting with a grand fireplace and says "go ahead! We've made everything ready for your enjoyment!!" Without expecting anything in return other than cheap parking fee and denying to receive tips or compensation.
I figured the least I could do was a glowing review.
The day after I had one of my best hikes ever up Kattanakken, it's a tough one, but majestic.
10/10 Would go again, and really be sure to buy something from the owners at Briksdalsbre Fjellstove AS, I'm 100% sure if they went out of business the prices would triple and the fees...
Read moreThis was a P&O cruise trip to the Briksdal Glacier. We were delayed in port due to weather so unfortunately had a very short time to get to see the glacier. The Troll Cars drop you at a point up the mountain (pick up at the cafe when you get off the coach) and then you walk up to the glacier passing beautiful waterfalls. Again you'll need good walking boots, wrap up warm and pace yourself. The terrain is unsuitable for mobility impaired and not for wheelchairs. The lake near the glacier is beautiful and obviously freezing! There's toilet facilities half way up. Again it's worth the walk but you'll suffer later due to the unevenness of the paths etc. Its gravelly and loose so take it steady. The cafe in the lodge is lovely with fresh food, cakes and refreshments with prices you'd expect but not too extortionate. They take card which helps. Great visit which...
Read moreI had never seen a glacier before - I prefer warmer climes for my summer holidays, despite living in Spain but this was a truly incredible experience.
Apparently much smaller now due to global warming, the glacier is still an incredibly impressive sight.
We were told that the blue colouration is due to oxygen being squeezed from the ice due to the pressure being exerted by the ice above, and that this process will continue as long as snow keeps falling and turning into yet more ice - although there is a worry that with less snowfall each year, this may not continue for ever, so go and see it while you can!
There's also a reasonably priced bar/café where you can warm up if necessary, but you have to buy something to use the toilets, or pay a...
