Generally I like history and enjoy seeing historical sites (and ruins in moderation). I drove an hour and a half from Muscat to specifically see the old city of Qalhat, of which nothing really remains but the mausoleum. It is a great structure and the scenery is really nice with the mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Everything else around it is stones, which vaguely give you an idea of this once large city. I think of they do some restoration, it will make a huge difference. The other problem is that there is no signage and no information. I still don't know who Bibi Maryam is. I wish the government use some of the oil money to develop it's heritage tourism.

Bibi Maryam mausoleum to One of the oldest civilizations was in Qalhat. Oman want knew by Qalhat port in Bibi Maryam spot. The place was visited by Italian Marco Polo in the past. He described as having “fine bazaars and one of the most beautiful mosques.” Some say the lonely tomb was built by Baha al-Din Ayaz, king of the Hormuz Empire, for his wife, Bibi Maryam. But others maintain that it was indeed her who built it for him. The heritage is wild till reaching the sea not only the Mosque. The village restoration is going on since many years but still not completed. The road to the place is washed away by Wadi so 4x4 car preferred.

Currently (February 2020) under restoration, so you cannot enter the grounds. Still it is possible to take some photos from the mausoleum, but from some distance. Access by 4wd from Qalhat village (need to cross a wadi, and then a steep rubble road up the hill). If you only have a normal car, it is ~500meter walking from the paved road.
