🇫🇷 Is the Postman's Ideal Palace Worth a Visit?

Palais Ideal (a perfect one-day trip from Vaucluse to Drôme) It's a fantastic, somewhat magical place. The feeling it evokes is similar to that experienced when visiting any of Gaudí's creations. You seem to touch someone's genius, a fantastical realized dream, and at the same time, you touch the subconscious of a person bordering on madness. So, in brief: ✨️Cheval found an unusually shaped stone whose beauty and form astonished him. Upon researching the area's history, he discovered that it was once the seabed, meaning these stones are millions of years old. ✨️He took this as a sign that any dream can come true despite everything. His dream was a palace. From that day, he began collecting stones for construction while studying the architecture of different countries and eras. ✨️Upon retirement, he had a garden filled with stones. There, he started building his palace: from stones, cement, and wire—every day, sometimes at night, for 33 years. ✨️ You can find motifs from the Middle East, China, Algeria, with quite a bit of Gaudí's influence. The castle's walls feature inscriptions: quotes from Jesus, Buddha, scenes from various legends, books, cultures, and myths. Miniature depictions of temples, fountains, and towers... There is also his quote on the wall: 💬 "It doesn't matter your age or what you seek to achieve. As long as you are brave, resilient, and willing to work hard, you will surely succeed." On the facade, there is an inscription: "This building is the work of one man" and another: "10,000 days, 93,000 hours, 33 years" - as a reminder that dreams can and should be built with one's own hands. So, you may think of him as a genius or a madman, but in the city where so much of his faith and energy is concentrated, you realize the truth: Humans are capable of (almost) anything. And even with small "stones," you can pave the way to your dream 🙌

Ferdinand Cheval (French pronunciation: [fɛʁdinɑ̃ ʃəval]; 19 April 1836 – 19 August 1924), often nicknamed Facteur Cheval ("Mail Carrier Cheval") was a French mail carrier who spent 33 years building Le Palais idéal (the "Ideal Palace") in Hauterives, in southeastern France. It is regarded as an extraordinary example of naïve art architecture. Cheval was born in Charmes-sur-l'Herbasse to a poor farming family. He left school at age 13 to become a baker's apprentice, but eventually became a mail carrier. In 1858, he married his first wife, Rosaline Revol. They had two sons, Victorin Joseph Fernand (1864) and Ferdinand Cyril (1867). Victorin died after only a year, in 1865. Rosaline herself died in 1873. Five years later, Cheval met and married Claire-Philomène Richaud. Her dowry included the land on which the Palais Idéal stands today. In 1878, she gave birth to their daughter, Alice-Marie-Philomène, who died in 1894 at the age of 15. Alice's death hit Cheval the hardest and she was the last child he would have. 18 years later, his son Cyril and second wife Claire died within two years of each other, in 1912 and 1914, respectively.

The story of the Postmand who build this "Palace" is simply outstanding. The amount of hours and work spend on creating this place is amazing. The Palace it self is a true work of art, and the more you look at it the more you see. We spend about 1,5 hours at this place, and I am still amazed as I write this. This is a testament of will power, dedication and hard work. It cost 9,5 Euro for adults and 6,5 for children. You are not allowed to carry backpacks since it is narrow, but there is boxes for storing backpacks while you visit the site. Parking was relatively easy, but most of parking is for cars below 2,2 meters. All text in the museum is in French, but Google Lens will help you with this. If you are in the area, do not hesitate to go see this, and read the story.

It's hard to review this without partial stars. As the life labor of love of one man, I'd give this monument 4/4.5 stars. As a destination, one on a little town in the middle of nowhere Farmville france, I'd give it 3/3.5 stars. So, I'll give it a weak 4 stars. That is to say, if you have nothing to do, it's convenient to you and want to see something cool for 1 to 2 hours. Do it. The cost is eur9.50 each adult. I suspect it's FAR busier and more expensive and less pleasant in the warmer months though. The grounds need maintenance for certain and I wonder if they do light shows and special events. Doesn't look like they do, but they should. Pro tip... if you're outside the entrance, use the bathroom next to the city hall.

This architectural marvel, crafted by the humble postman Ferdinand Cheval, transcends mere description. Every corner boasts a kaleidoscope of intricate sculptures and intricate masonry, a testament to Cheval's unyielding dedication and creativity. The sheer audacity and poetry in the construction, comprising an amalgamation of various styles and influences, evoke a sense of wonder and awe.
