Jellyfish Lake (Palauan: Ongeim'l Tketau, "Fifth Lake") is a marine lake located on Eil Malk island in Palau. Eil Malk is part of the Rock Islands, a group of small, rocky, mostly uninhabited islands in Palau's Southern Lagoon, between Koror and Peleliu. There are about 70 other marine lakes located throughout the Rock Islands. Millions of golden jellyfish migrate horizontally across the lake daily.
Jellyfish Lake is connected to the ocean through fissures and tunnels in the limestone of an ancient Miocene reef. However the lake is sufficiently isolated and the conditions are different enough that the diversity of species in the lake is greatly reduced from the nearby lagoon. First time is 2011 May, the amount of the jelly fish is so large, it’s hard not to bump into as you snorkel around. 2021 November, it feels like there are a lot less. However the water is so clear that I can really experience the moment of jelly fish. This is the only place in the world that you can swim with jelly fish because they evolve to be harmless. There are about 20 of such lakes, but all others are under protection. This is only one open to public. Even so, the past 10 years, it has been closed twice due to extreme weather condition. Jelly fish is very sensitive, they need sunlight for photosynthesis, but too warm of the weather, they could die. So coming here on the raining days is actually the best, they came up to the top.
