Very interesting museum This is the first customs house ever opened by the spanish in the americas and a crucial point of the gold trade. The façade in undergoing a major revamp but it's still worth visiting the exhibition and specially watching the introductory video about the history of portobello and the attacks suffered by the spanish in this location. Entrance fee 5 USD

As of July 2023 this place is reopened. In fact when we went there they were having very interesting exhibits and free popcorn and cotton candy. It’s very well preserved and there are lots of photo opportunities in the surrounding fort filled with Spanish canons still pointing to the sea which is still filled with visible shipwrecks both modern and ancient.

We were pointed to this fabulously renovated building by Tourist PC Miranda - an absolute treasure of an officer who we kept bumping into. He was a perfect advocate for tourism. The building itself had clear and interesting storyboards throughout. Delightful.
