One of the places we visited in Davao back in 2016 was the Davao Butterly House. I thought it would be more of a garden. I did not have high expectations. I’ve been to several butterfly houses and gardens but butte4lies are skittish creatures. It’s quite hard to see them fluttering about when there are people about. When we first entered, we didn’t see that many butterflies. I was right. Most of them will fly away at the first signs of humans. So I busied myself with the other features of the place. Curiosity led me to this wooden shelf with curious little things stuck to it. It turned out to be the chrysalis of butterflies! It was the first time I saw a chrysalis. It was amazing to see something so tiny. Imagine that from them, beautiful creatures will emerge. While looking through the chrysalis, i chanced upon an eclosing. According to the card on the wall, eclosing is the term when a butterfly emerges from the chrysalis. And what a sight it was. I never thought I’d witness a butterfly actually emerge from the cocoon. It was truly amazing. After witnessing the eclosing, I went and explored the rest of the garden. By then, the weather was cooler and there were lesser people. Butterflies started to emerge here and there. We were anle to see loads of butterflies but I couldn’t get a decent photo.

The play area outside is not safe for children. The back of the plastic butterfly cannot be climbed upon as it is lined with spikes (to simulate the follicles). The slide, teeter totter and swing are all rusted, dirty and ill-maintained. Inside the facility there are few readable visual aides to help people learn. For example the exhibit about a butterfly’s life cycle is like replicas or fossils strung on wires. An audio tutorial can’t be that costly. The trail around the periphery of the museum is narrow. We were in a large group. People pushing, trying to see disadvantaged the small children there. Again, signage (photos, places of origin, et.) would have helped.

Feast your eyes on a collection of butterflies and other insects, as well as well-preserved specimens of various arachnids and lepidopterans. Great place for arthropod enthusiasts. 😊😊
