Read moreI had high expectations visiting Malacañang of the North, thinking it would offer a rich historical experience and a deeper look into the Marcos era—but unfortunately, it was quite underwhelming.
The place felt neglected and poorly maintained. Many parts of the house are dusty, the displays are outdated, and some rooms seem empty or just filled with old furniture without any context or explanation. It honestly felt more like walking through an old, unused house rather than a historical site.
There’s not much to do or interact with—just a few rooms to peek into and some framed photos. It would’ve been great to have more curated exhibits, engaging displays, or even a guided tour to make the experience more meaningful. As it stands, it feels like a missed opportunity to truly showcase the history and stories behind the place.
The view of Paoay Lake from the balcony is nice, but beyond that, there’s very little substance. If you’re short on time while visiting Ilocos Norte, this might be a spot...
Read moreThe Malacañang of the North (or Malacañang ti Amianan in the Ilocano dialect) is a national park and museum in Paoay, Ilocos Norte province. Built in 1977 by the Philippine Tourism Authority, it was originally the official residence of President Ferdinand Marcos and family when visiting his home province.
One of the 29 summer residences of the Marcoses, it was sequestered by the Philippine Government when they were removed from dictatorial power in 1986 by the People Power Revolution.
Twenty years since management was given back to the care of Ilocos Norte. Ferdinand’s daughter, then-governor Imee Marcos had the complex refurbished to become a major historic attraction. The University of Santo Tomas’ Center for Conservation of Cultural Property and Environment in the Tropics put together exhibits in every room, each one curated with themes reflecting the president’s landmark public programs.
