Chudow Castle — Attraction in gmina Gierałtowice

It's a hidden gem nestled between all those magnificent ruins of castles in Poland! It's like something straight out of a fairy tale from H. Chr. Andersen - "The Emperor's New Clothes”: It's not a full castle, but it's also not a total ruin.

Some parts have been reconstructed, and although it's not the most refined or pompous, it's absolutely delightful. It's full of fascinating facts and has a whole range of things to see, including armour, a small cannon, and even a toilet! The castle looks absolutely gorgeous! It's such a pity it hasn't been renovated completely. It's so obvious that it's all about the money!

When you first start your tour, you'll find a lovely little book inside with a fascinating intro: "Legend has it that Chudów Castle is a place of miracles. So throw a coin into our well for good luck and leave a good word in this book."

The lovely Chudów Castle, built way back in the 16th century, was a grand noble residence designed with defence in mind, thanks to its location in wetlands, thick walls, and a surrounding moat. The original entrance to the castle was really something! It was a drawbridge over the moat that led directly to the second floor of the castle tower. The lovely old tower, the oldest building in the castle, was originally used as a place to live. The castle's first known owner was Jan de Hodow, who was first mentioned in 1434 as a judge and later as the village's owner in 1459. Before the castle was built, there was a wooden tower on the site. It's such a shame, but it was destroyed by fire around the end of the 15th century.

The lovely brick castle we see today was probably built by Jan Gierałtowski in the early 1500s. The castle started out as just a small stone and brick tower, with other buildings added later around a courtyard with a well. It's such a shame that a fire in 1875 caused significant damage. The then-owner, Count Schaffgotsch, had much of the castle's walls taken down, leaving behind the charming ruins that we can still enjoy today.

I'm really into tiles, so I was absolutely blown away by the exhibition of these amazing medieval Gothic cocklestove tiles that were found in Poland. They were discovered on the castle grounds during restoration work and archaeological excavations.

They accept card payments! It would be really lovely if the board in front of the entrance had info in English. Or maybe a QR code with text that tells you where you can find the info in other languages on the website would be a good idea? That way, you can just scan the QR code and away you go! I also think the white strips after the glue could be improved aesthetically. I think this area has so much potential! The existing information and display are really beautiful, but I feel the remnants of the stickers could be improved.

The whole area is full of fascinating contrasts. On the one hand, there's the beautiful, expansive park with its wooden statues, evoking a sense of history and wonder. Then, there's the intriguing blend of modernity set in the ruins of the castle, complete with tavern-style tables. And, finally, there's the bold embrace of modernity, which might not be to everyone's taste

(I wonder if I might mention the car parked in front of the castle gate. It appears to be labelled 'Do not park', yet there is a large black car parked there. I'm not sure if it belongs to the gentleman who sells tickets in the castle.. I would say no. Could I ask why there is a car parked there in the first place, even if it belongs to the owner of the business? See on the photo)

And the wider surroundings are really coming along! There's a lot of construction activity, new buildings have been built, outdoor events are organised there, and a few parking lots...

Zamek wzniesiony został przez Jana Gierałtowskiego w latach 30. XVI wieku na miejscu dawnego średniowiecznego grodu. Początkowo miał charakter obronny, a świadczą o tym grube mury ze strzelnicami oraz fosa. Zamek zbudowano na planie prostokąta, w środku którego znajdował się niewielki dziedziniec z centralnie usytuowaną studnią. W południowo-zachodniej części wznosi się czworoboczna wieża, po prawej stronie od niej znajdował się tzw. dom pański, a po lewej tzw. dom służebny. Do zamku wchodziło się mostem drewnianym, prowadzącym bezpośrednio na drugą kondygnację wieży. W roku 1995 utworzono Fundację „Zamek Chudów”, której założycielem i pierwszym prezesem był Andrzej Sośnierz. Po przejęciu obiektu w roku 1999 fundacja zaczęła prowadzić prace rekonstrukcyjne i wykopaliskowe. Do 2004 roku odbudowano i zadaszono zamkową wieżę, w której obecnie mieści się muzeum zamku w Chudowie, prezentujące zabytki pozyskane podczas badań archeologicznych obiektu. Podniesiono również mury wokół dziedzińca i odnowiono bramy. Zwiedzanie obejmuje basztę i dziedziniec. Muzeum czynne w sezonie i wyłącznie w weekendy. Wtedy jest tu niestety tłum ludzi i dziesiątki brzydkich straganów i budek z fast foodami. No, ale naprawdę warto przepchnąć się przez ten tłum i obejrzeć ruiny. Polecam zaparkowanie nie przy samym zamku tylko jakieś 200 metrów wcześniej na bezpłatnym parkingu w pobliżu stadionu...

Zamek w Chudowie to historyczna budowla a raczej ruiny renesansowego zamku z lat 30. XVI wieku, wzniesionego przez szlachcica Jana Saszowskiego z Gierałtowic na miejscu drewnianej wieży obronnej. Powstała w 1995 roku fundacja „Zamek Chudów” ma na celu rekonstrukcję obiektu. Od 2000 roku urządza też coraz szerzej znane w okolicy Jarmarki Średniowieczne i szereg innych imprez. W 2002 roku uruchomiono w piwnicy zamkowej wieży muzeum – prezentowane tam eksponaty pochodzą z badań archeologicznych zamku. Obiekt murowany z kamienia i cegły. Od początku maja do końca września w każdy weekend na zamku w Chudowie odbywają się ciekawe imprezy historyczne i nie tylko. Szczególnie warto wybrać się tutaj w połowie sierpnia, kiedy to przed zamkiem wyrastają kramy i kramiki podczas Jarmarku Średniowiecznego. Osobiście byłem na kilku turniejach rycerskich i z pewnością nie raz tu jeszcze zawitam.
