Grutas de Santo António — Attraction in Porto de Mós

My visit was very good. On a September day, I decided going for a drive. I was driving up the side of the mountain and came to me to visit the caves head. I stopped, and I went to buy a ticket 6 euros. The person told me to wait for the guide that was finishing the the tour. I waited and the tour finished. The guide told me to wait a few minutes to see if any more visitors arrive. I waited for 5 more minutes and the guide called me to start the tour. I looked around and It was only myself in line. I liked that way. It looked like a VIP tour. The guide was nice and paciente by explaining the origens and the discovery that lead to what is now. I enjoyed. I had been at the site and never went in. Lovely place to visit and apparently it's always 16-18 degrees C so you'd probably appreciate it more in the middle of a heatwave. When we bought the tickets, we've been told the next tour starts in 10 min and it's in Portuguese. And the English one will start in 25-30 min. Since we didn't want to wait, we joined the Portuguese tour. Big mistake! The tour took "1 hour" and not 15 min as I thought it would. I am sure the guide gave a lot of interesting information but spending an hour down there without understanding a word was painful. I'd highly recommend waiting for the English one if you don't...

Próximas, quer em termos geográficos, quer em termos naturais das Grutas de Alvados, as Grutas de Santo António foram mais uma descoberta da beleza natural e tão característica do PNSAC.

As Grutas de Santo António foram descobertas, ocasionalmente, em 2 de junho de 1955 por dois homens que trabalhavam perto da Pedra do Altar.

A história conta que, procurando um pássaro que tentavam apanhar, os homens entraram por uma grande fenda aberta num rochedo, onde aquele se tinha refugiado.

Assim se descobriu a última gruta turística do concelho, que ocupa uma área aproximada de 6 000 m2. A sua sala maior mede 80m x 50m e a altura máxima é de 43 metros.

Dispondo de uma chaminé natural que permite ventilar a gruta, a temperatura mantém-se quase constante, oscilando entre o 16º e os 18º.

Após a sua abertura ao público, à semelhança das outras grutas, houve um investimento ao nível dos acessos e da iluminação, que procurou realçar toda a beleza das salas, das estalagmites e estalactites que as compõem.

Atualmente, as Grutas de Santo António são servidas por um conjunto de edifícios de apoio, e a visita inicia-se pelo túnel artificial que desce até a uma primeira sala, onde se pode admirar o grande lago natural, que funciona como antecâmara a uma estreita passagem que depois se abre numa sala monumental e única, cuja dimensão e beleza a tornam invulgar, continuando a ser considerada pelos especialistas e público em geral como uma das mais belas e...
