Thoroughly enjoyed our visit here and will be returning without a doubt (on a dark night / new moon).

We booked the evening sky tour relatively last minute but were gladly accommodated. On arrival we were warmly greeted and then introduced to our guides for the evening.

We were wisely separated into an English speaking cohort and a Portuguese speaking cohort and then talked through what to expect and given a brief but accurate history of our universe.

I was surprised to be being guided by career astronomers and cosmologists and their passion for the subject was obvious. Their ability to make complex concepts very accessible and to include the younger children in the discussion was excellent.

Despite attending on a full moon (making the visibility of distant objects/bodies much more difficult) we were still able to get excellent views of four major planets, binary stars, and distant nebulae. I recommend if at all possible to visit on a night with as little moonlight as your schedule and the lunar cycle allows.

As mentioned above, I will definitely be revisiting on a dark night to see even more than we did...

Booked on Aug 10, and was lucky to see Perseids meteors. Well organized. They started with an indoor introduction in the theatre before we walked outside down to observation area. Path is gravel, but short. Helpful to know but they don't tell you: -that there are bathrooms in the main building and also down in the observation area. there is seating down in the observation area -our tour went over the expected 1.5 hours, and we had a 55 min drive back to Evora, just fyi -There is red lighting so you can manage your way around but you are asked not to use cell phone lights. There is also a coffee vending machine in the main building as depending on when you book, you could be up late! -there is parking close by across road I google street viewed and didn't see the access road, so street view is out of date, but don't worry, you will find...

what a wonderful experience being able to see the milky way with your own eyes due to the lack of light pollution there and have an astrophysicist give an enthusiastic free lecture about how stars work, star nurseries - plus some practical tricks to find your way around the constellations and letting you see some nebulae and clusters in the telescopes (tip: bring a sweater or jacket! even if it's 30°C in the day)

We booked the one and a half hour stargazing introduction. Fred our English speaking guide did a fantastic talk and showed us views of star clusters, planets and nebula through a large telescope. He answered many questions and was entertaining throughout. The views of Saturn and Jupiter were spectacular. Would recommend for anyone with an interest in the night sky as a beginner or keen amateur.

We booked both Sun and Star observation sessions, which were instructed by Fred. His guided sessions were both informative and his sense of humor added to the enjoyment. Thanks for a fantastic experience, especially the sun gazing which was a first. We learned a lot and can definitely recommend doing both the Sun and Star observations while visiting Monsaraz.
