One of the most spectacular viewpoints in Madeira! Sitting above the clouds, Ninho da Manta offers jaw-dropping views over jagged peaks, deep valleys, and dramatic ridgelines. Perfect for sunrise or sunset — the light, the colors, the silence… it’s pure magic. Ninho da Manta is a place where silence meets beauty.

🔸 Tips: • Allow at least 30 minutes to walk up for the best views — it’s worth every step. • The top car park is tiny, and police often close the road when it’s full. • Use Carpark 2 instead — it’s cheaper, more spacious, and gives you a stunning walk to the top. • Bring a jacket, proper hiking shoes, and water/snacks if you’re continuing along the trail.

Some of the best views in Madeira. We hiked up to near here for sunrise. We started about 45 minutes before sunrise and lots of people had head torches but there was already enough light to see once your eyes adjust.

The sun actually rose slightly behind Pico do Arierio and I’ve read that it does this in winter so probably best to view the sunrise at the main spot during winter. It didn’t matter for us anyway as there were low lying clouds so we couldn’t actually see the sun for the first 20 minutes of it rising.

It was very windy and gets a bit cold when you’re just sitting still waiting for the sunrise so bring clothes...

The Ninho da Manta Viewpoint is located just a few meters from the beginning of Vereda do Areeiro (PR1), one of the most iconic walking routes in Madeira.
