The Cetătuia Monastery in Iasi is an Orthodox monastery of monks, founded in the 17th century by voivode Gheorghe Duca (1665-1666, 1668-1672 and 1678-1683). Set on a high hill in the southern part of Iași, from where you can see a beautiful panorama of the city, Cetătuia Monastery dominates the landscape with its slender figure, guarded by an imposing tower and surrounded by a weathered stone wall.

It was built from the beginning as a medieval fortified complex capable of providing the ruler and the boyars with a foothold for an armed resistance against the invaders. A printing press with Greek letters, brought from Venice, worked here. Having reached a ruin at the end of the 19th century, the monastery was restored in the interwar period at the initiative of the historian Nicolae Iorga.

The Cetătuia Monastery ensemble was included on the List of historical monuments in Iași County in 2015, and being made up of the following 6 objectives:

Church "St. Apostles Peter and Paul" - dating from the period 1669-1672. The Gothic Hall - dating from the period 1669-1672. The Royal House - dating from the period 1669-1672. The cell body - dating from 1928. The bell tower - dating from 1670. The enclosure wall -...

Located on the top of Cetatuia Hill of the old Moldovian capital, the monastery was built by Prince Gheorghe Duca in the 17th century.

The monastery is surrounded by fortifications with towers on the corners. In the past, it provided refuge during enemy siege or full-scale invasions. The name itself, Cetățuia, means citadel or fortress in Romanian.

The uniqueness of Cetățuia Monastery consists in the fact that the entire ensemble of monastic architecture has been preserved.

A special place is the palace destined to the lodging of the prince, a fortified building characteristic to the 17th century and the kitchen or, according to other opinions, the Turkish bath, which is the only construction of this kind that has been preserved within a monastic ensemble.

In addition there is also a gothic hall, a museum of medieval art, a tower called "Pilgrim’s Dinner", from where one can admire the panorama of Iași and its famous wine cellars with wine obtained from its...

"What makes Cetatuia unique is that it has maintained the whole ensemble of monastic architecture. The royal palace is a fortified building from the 17th century. The steeple tower and the massive walls are proof that the monastery was also conceived as a refuge in case of the need for a real fortress."

The hike to the monastery is great. There are vineyards all around and you can buy monastery wine which is very lively. The complex is impressive as it served as summer residence for rulers. There were also few other historical events here like Aurel Vlaicu's flight. The church is superb.
