Municipiul Mediaș este așezat în bazinul mijlociu al râului Târnava Mare, la o distanță de 55 de km de municipiul reședință de județ, Sibiu. În prima mențiune documentară, apare ca Mediesy în anul 1267. În secolele XII - XIII, regii Ungariei au așezat în zona Mediașului coloniști germani, cunoscuți sub numele de sași. Cu o istorie de 800 de ani, orașul Mediaș este în prezent o localitate de aproximativ 50.000 de locuitori, cu un aspect "vechiuț" ca și cum timpul nu prea ar fi trecut peste vechile așezări ale cetății.
