The Chindia Tower is a tower in the Curtea Domnească monuments ensemble in Târgovişte, Romania, built in the 15th century. The tower was begun during the second reign of Prince Vlad III the Impaler over Wallachia and took its final form during the 19th century. It initially had a military purpose, but during its history, it has been used as a guard point, a fire spotter, and for storing and protecting the state treasury. Between 1847 and 1851, the Chindia Tower was completely restored by Gheorghe Bibescu who added 5 metres (16 ft) to its height. The building in its current form has a height of 27 metres (89 ft) and a diameter of 9 metres (30 ft).

The Chindia Tower, the most important tourist attraction in Târgovişte, is considered the city's symbol; the tower elements are present in the city's emblem, at the top and also at the bottom. As a monument the tower now houses an exhibition of documents, weapons and objects which belonged to Vlad the Impaler. Today the tower is administered by the National Museum...

The Chindia Tower is a part of Targoviste Citadel or Curtea Domneasca, being the most important tourist attraction and also the symbol of the city. All objectives are nice and interesting. Near to these you can find a huge park. Is good for family with children and groups to visit or for beautiful wedding pictures. In same court with these there is also an old church and a Museum of printing and old Romanian books. the first documentary mentions of the Curtea Domnească date from 1403 and 1409 and now houses an exhibition of documents, weapons and objects which belonged to Vlad the Impaler...

We passed by Târgoviște and the Tower on the way back home from Bucharest on Monday. It was supposed to be closed, but parking was readily available and free on the street, so we gave it a shot and surprisingly it was open. Tickets were 15RON per person, and we spent about an hour there. The tower was in great condition, and there was a little museum with written works from 100s of years ago that showcased the evolution of the Romanian language. Bathrooms were super clean too. Nice quiet historical place. Cheap tickets, easy parking. Great place to visit during a road trip break.

By far the most interesting object for visitors inside the Royal complex. The name of the tower in translation means "Sunset tower". This imposing structure was built during the time of Vlad Dracul, the father of the famous Vlad Tepes, also known as Dracula(thanks to the famous Bram Soker novel). The function of the tower evolved from that of a bell tower in the beginning of 15th century, to that of a watchtower, refuge and defence tower during the 15th-16th centuries and the to that of a clock tower in the 17th century.
