Kizhi is a unique island in Lake Onega, Republic of Karelia, Russia, known for its monuments of wooden architecture. The main attraction is the Kizhi Pogost, which was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990. It includes the Church of the Transfiguration of the Lord (1714), which is 37 meters high and was built without a single nail. According to legend, the master threw his axe into the lake after finishing the work, saying: "There has never been and never will be another one like this!" Next to it is the Church of the Intercession of the Virgin (1764) with 9 domes, as well as the tent-shaped bell tower (1862), which completes the ensemble. Another ancient building is the Church of the Resurrection of Lazarus (14th century), which is considered the oldest wooden church in Russia. It is said to have miraculous powers. The Chapel of the Archangel Michael, which was moved from the village of Lelikozero, is notable for its two-tiered iconostasis. The name of Kizhi Island comes from the Veps or Karelian word "kizhat," which means "island of games" or "meeting place." Since the 1950s, the island has been home to more than 80 ancient structures, including houses, mills, and saunas. It is not just a museum, but a living symbol of Russian culture, where each building holds its own secret. The island is 6 kilometers long and 1 kilometer wide, located 68 kilometers from Petrozavodsk. The climate is temperate, with cold winters and cool summers, and white nights can be observed in June. There...
Read moreI visited this island a few years back and i still have strong impression on my memory. The journey to the island from st. Petersburg was huge challenges for a foreign family although we had been living a Russian city a couple of years, driving on the rural road with international driving licence was not comfortable journey. Nonetheless we managed to reach the fantastic island safely with the help of bribery to local policemen)). The island is famous for ancient wooden made churches, buildings. The mysterious wooden made buildings in Calm, well maintained landscape gave me exotic experiences like wondering around in a fairy tale or cartoon like isolated island. The nature of the island also exotic enough to have high eager to check around every corner of this island. We actually ended up with being exhausted after wondering around all great spot of island. You also have to keep reminding yourself that there is limited time for sightseeing in this island. Otherwise you may loose the chance to see full of great views in every corner of the mysterious island. I strongly recommend to stay in the near city for a couple of days more and spend a few days to have multiple visits the Island. One day trip definitely was not long enough to enjoy the full of great architecture and mysterious landscape in a fairytale Russian island. I bet you will enjoy the exciting journey to explore hidden gems made by...
Read moreIsland protected by unesco designated as int'l heritage. When you go there, you will be located as north as when you go to the middle of Norway. You can't go to Kizhi in the winter as the rivers freeze and supplies can only be sent by military chopper. Kizhi is under the jurisdiction of the Karelian Republic of the Russian Federation. The locals are bilingual: They speak Russian as well as the Karelian dialect (which is a mixture of Finnish and their own distinct Viking dialect). Definitely worth visiting. There is not much to see as the island is small but I bet you want to add that "been there" pin on your map! 2-4 hours are enough. If you happen to spend the night there in the middle of the summer you will get to experience brighter white nights than in Saint Petersburg because Kizhi is almost in the Arctic Circle. There is a museum of local culture there too, where you will be told how the locals used to spend their time before the digital era. Of course there is 4G...
