Kaštieľ Esterházy — Attraction in Galanta

I recently toured the Neo-Gothic Esterházy Chateau in Galanta, and it left quite an impression. Nestled in a vast green park full of mature trees and historic charm, the chateau delivers a romantic, almost fairytale ambiance.

Architecturally, the building is a striking blend of history and imagination. Its origins date back to 1633, when brothers Daniel and Pavol Esterházy built a Renaissance fortress on this site. Over the centuries, it was rebuilt in Baroque style under Bishop Imrich (1736), and finally given its present Neo-Gothic form around 1861 under Count József Esterházy — a bold romantic reinterpretation in the “English Gothic / Tudor” spirit.

Walking through, you’ll see beautiful vaulted rooms, ornamental details, towers, and staircases that speak of bygone grandeur. The restored northern tower (completed end of 2021) is particularly worth seeing — it houses exhibits that trace Galanta’s history through time. The southern tower is also under partial renovation and holds museum spaces.

However — and this is important — the chateau is not yet fully restored. Some wings, façades, and interior parts still await serious rehabilitation. The ambition is big: plans include restoring the façade, modernizing infrastructure (lighting, sanitary, etc.), creating educational trails about the Esterházy legacy, and reviving the chateau’s internal grandeur.

Despite the ongoing work, the place is absolutely worth a visit. Even its “unfinished” sections tell a story of resilience and vision. As you wander the park, enter rooms with exposed beams or weathered walls, and gaze up at the towers reaching skyward, you’ll feel the weight of centuries and the promise of what’s to come. Neogothic castle in Galanta built by the Hungarian noble family Esterhazy in 1630s. Surrounded by park with lot of greens, trees and benches. Restaurant inside the castle. Galánta két Eszterházy kastélya közül ez a nagyobb, látványosabb. A kisebb - nevében reneszánsz, de barokk stílusú - teljes felújítása már 1992-ben megtörtént. Ma ott a házasságkötőterem, a Városi Galéria és a Honismereti Múzeum működik. Ennek a kastélynak nagyobb része még ma is romos állapotban van, és részletekben zajlik a felújítása: például a főkapu a "Galántai Neogótikus Kastély" Polgári Társulás önkéntes hozzájárulásából újult meg 2014-ben, a kastély udvara pedig a galántai Samsung Electonics támogatásával. Olvasom, hogy állami támogatás keretében is érkezik pénz, így a „Galánta az évszázadok spirálján” pályázat révén, amiről 2018-ban döntöttek. Évek óta működik vendéglő a kastélyban, amihez pinceétterem és borospince is tartozik. A kastély északi szárnyában 2011 szeptemberétől kiállítóterem működik (ezt a szárnyat 2011-re teljes mértékben felújították). Ezen túl van egy esketőterem is.

A kastély története: 1633-ban Esterházy Dániel és Esterházy Pál építtette. 1736-ban barokk stílusban építették át. Mai formáját 1860-ban kapta, amikor Esterházy József neogótikus stílusúra formálta.
