Lake Bohinj Shoreline Trail • Difficulty: Easy • Duration: 2-3 hours (round trip) • Distance: 12 km around the lake
Starting Point: Most people start at Ribčev Laz, the small village at the eastern end of the lake, where you can also find the iconic Church of St. John the Baptist and the stone bridge, both offering excellent photo opportunities.
Eastern Shore: The trail along the eastern shore is well-maintained and easy to follow. It passes through forests and meadows, with several places where you can stop to enjoy the view or have a picnic. The path here is often shaded, making it a pleasant walk even on warm days.
Northern Shore: Continuing along the northern shore, the trail remains relatively flat and close to the water. This section offers stunning views of the lake’s mirror-like surface reflecting the surrounding mountains. There are several small beaches where you can take a break, swim, or just relax by the water.
Western Shore: The western side of the lake is more rugged, with the trail becoming narrower and less developed in places. This part of the trail feels more remote and offers a more intimate experience with nature. The path winds through dense forests and along rocky shores, with fewer people and more opportunities for solitude.
Southern Shore: As you return along the southern shore, the trail becomes more developed again, leading back toward Ribčev Laz. This section offers some of the best panoramic views of the lake, especially in the late afternoon when the sunlight creates beautiful reflections on the water.
If you’re interested in combining hiking with water activities, you can rent a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard along the way. There are also several quiet spots perfect for a...
Read moreBeautiful lake 40min by Arriva bus from Bled. In comparison to Bled there’s a lot less people but there is also a lack of focal point and a less accessible path.
The eastern tip of the lake where tourists tend to start is lovely. If you walk in an anti clockwise direction, the initial trail offers beautiful views and easy access to the water. I suggest turning back once you can’t see the lake anymore if you want the walk to remain easy and scenic.
The trail then becomes more like a forest / bush walk with lots of muddy and rocky stretches including a dried river crossing full of rocks. Not too much elevation involved but make sure to wear proper shoes and probably not suitable for young kids.
Once you reach the western end of the lake, you need to walk through some roads (fairly quiet) before restarting the trail which is shared with bike riders. The trail is a separate path on the right hand side of the slightly lower road. This mean your view of the lake is pretty much blocked by the trees and the distance to the lake for most of this whole west to east direction walk. On the plus side this half of the trail is fairly easy.
The lake itself is stunning, fairy tail like and must see. If you only have time for one lake I would recommend bled for the better walking path and the 360 degree views from pretty much...
Read moreThese pics don’t do it justice. It took me two weeks over Christmas holidays to figure out how to go from Ljubljana to this lake to Lake Bled in one day by public transport. It was said it couldn’t be done.. we left early by train to get good connections. First train change the first train came into train station at the same time the second train was scheduled to leave. I read the second train eould wait for any passengers. Hubby had worked in telecommunications in Qld Esil for 43 years and said “No way”’ was thrilled when a worker in a platform asked if anyone wanted our next train.. it waited for us to make the connection! Only mistake we made was more days in Lake Bled. Make sure you walk around it and the second or third day take the train to the Croatian capital, Zagreb. . The 6 hours train journey to Split in Croatia is beautiful. Due to time factors.. our trip from Australia was already 9 weeks, we took a day bus Trip to Dubrovnik. It was about 10 hours and with my knee replacements was concerned. Was no problem and what a day!! Do not fly into Split. Worst airport ever and I am not a bad flyer. Train...
