Add this to your Slovenia itinerary 🇸🇮🚂 An amazing day trip from Ljubljana is a stop at the incredible Postojna Cave & Predjama Castle 🏰 🐉 Taking a tram through a massive cave and seeing the fairytale castle built into the mountain is a must do in Slovenia! You can buy a combined ticket for both sites for €42 and spend the entire day exploring. Just be sure to buy your ticket online ahead of time as there are specific tour times. I took the bus from Ljubljana, which cost me €5.30 and dropped me off right in front of the caves! 🚌 There are restaurants and the beautiful Hotel Jama where you can have lunch or dinner, or even stay a night on your way through. I highly recommend you add this super fun day trip to your Slovenia itinerary! Predjama Cave Castle, also known as Predjamski grad, is a fascinating structure in Slovenia and offers both historical and architectural significance. Here is a review of the castle: ### Positives 1. **Unique location**: - The castle is spectacularly built into a rock face and offers a breathtaking view. The combination of nature and architecture makes it an impressive photo opportunity. 2. **History**: - Predjama has a rich history dating back to the 12th century. It was once the home of Erazem of Predjama, a legendary robber lord, which gives the castle a mystical character. 3. **Architecture**: - The architecture of the castle is remarkable and showcases medieval building styles. The design makes the most of the natural cave and offers interesting insights into how people lived in earlier times. 4. **Tourist infrastructure**: - There are well-developed information and guided tours for visitors, including audio-visual information about the castle's history and legends. 5. **Surrounding nature**: - The area surrounding the castle is scenic with hiking trails and other attractions nearby, such as Postojna Cave or بهره Nature Park (Bela krajina). ### Negatives 1. **Access**: - Access may be difficult due to weather conditions (e.g. wet or snowy), which is something to consider when visiting in winter. 2. **Overcrowding**: - It can get very touristy in the summer months, so it can be overcrowded, which could affect the experience. 3. **Restricted interior spaces**: - Not all parts of the castle are open or accessible to visitors, which may limit exploration. 4. **Parking**: - Depending on the season, parking may be limited or located far from the entrance. ### Conclusion Predjama Castle is an impressive example of medieval architecture and a unique attraction in Slovenia. Its combination of history, legendary stories and stunning natural surroundings makes it a worthwhile destination for any visitor to the country. Anyone interested in history or just wanting to enjoy stunning landscapes should not miss a visit - but ideally plan outside of peak season for a more pleasant experience.

The historical castle is located in an unique setting and well worth a visit for adults and children. It was built in the Middle Age, when safety was more important than the cold and damp living conditions. A visitor should be fit (there are many stairs to go up and down). A visitor could visit the whole castle in approximately 90 minutes (at least) needed to see everything, listening to audio guides or reading cards in English or Slovenian, and enjoying the scenery. We had individual audio devices provided to us at the entrance, which kept a kid as young as five entertained, to guide our visit. These audio guides are available in many languages and we found it was useful to explain the life inside the castle, through more than 20 different rooms and exhibits. The castle inside a cave can be reached every hour by a dedicated tourist bus, leaving in front of the main caves ticket office. The bus ride takes about 20 minutes from the main cave attraction (it is a free ride if you purchased a combined ticket for the cave and the castle) or by car through a narrow winding road through the hills. There is a return bus every hour back to the main cave attraction. There is also a carpark near the castle and a couple of restaurants in the area surrounding it. We did not fancy trying the restaurants because we saw a menu with interesting dishes in front of the entrance, but no prices were displayed. It was reported that the castle was surrounded by enemy forces in the middle ages, but it never fell. The cave system provided water and food was brought in via a secret entrance through the caves. The castle many areas, holes and cave were also used in a Jackie Chan movie, where he reportedly had an accident and sustained serious injuries during the filming.
