• Distance: 2 km • Duration: 1.5 to 2 hours • Difficulty: Easy to moderate The trail begins at the main entrance to the Tolmin Gorges, where you’ll find an information center, restrooms, and a small café. The path is well-marked and easy to follow, making it accessible even for those who are not experienced hikers. Key Highlights Along the Trail: 1. The Confluence of the Tolminka and Zadlaščica Rivers: Shortly after starting the trail, you’ll reach the point where the two rivers meet. This confluence is a picturesque spot where the turquoise waters of the Tolminka merge with the darker, narrower Zadlaščica River. The contrasting colors of the water are particularly striking. 2. The Bear’s Head (Medvedova glava): As you continue along the trail, you’ll come across a unique rock formation known as the Bear’s Head. This large boulder appears to be suspended between the walls of the Zadlaščica Gorge, creating an impressive natural sculpture. The rock is a popular photo spot and a distinctive feature of the trail. 3. Devil’s Bridge (Hudičev most): A highlight of the trail, Devil’s Bridge is an old stone bridge that spans the Tolminka Gorge, offering breathtaking views down into the canyon. The bridge is about 60 meters above the river, providing an exhilarating perspective of the gorge below. It’s a perfect vantage point for photography and for appreciating the scale of the canyon. 4. Thermal Spring: As you descend from Devil’s Bridge, you’ll pass by a thermal spring. This spring is a rare phenomenon in the area, with water that remains at a constant temperature of around 20°C year-round. It’s a small but interesting stop along the way, adding a bit of geological intrigue to your hike. 5. Dante’s Cave (Dantejeva jama): Near the end of the trail, you’ll have the option to take a short detour to visit Dante’s Cave. According to local legend, the Italian poet Dante Alighieri was inspired by this cave when writing his "Divine Comedy." The cave isn’t extensive, but it’s an atmospheric spot with a rich cultural association.

!!! READ ME BEFORE DECIDING TO GO HERE !!! False advertising at it's best! We were really excited for our final experience in Julian Alps, visiting every other thing they have to offer for several days of our stay, but this was such a let down, I had to write a review to warn future visitors. The "trail" has two parking lots, 1st being at the entrance and costs 3 EUR/h, 2nd one is 1 km from the entrance, its free (for now) but the shuttle service is not (info from one of the visitors). That's all OK. What is not OK, is that once you pay for the tickets and listen to the info person telling you that there is a circular trail, 1:30 h of walking and sightseeing - you notice very fast that the gorge is accessible for 100m only and then you return back to exit. That's it. The river bed itself isn't something new or spectacular - you can wet your feet, chill by the river... there are more beautiful (and free) ones in the vicinity. Your 1:30h long sightseeing hike is really a 5 minute one, then you head up the stairs (very hard on a hot day) not seeing anything until the top of the gorge - where you end up on a main road and follow it back to the entrance. So you pay up 8-10 EUR per person for a 5 min hike, few nice pictures (all of online pictures of the gorge are from the same spot!!!) and then 30-60min of walk on endless stairs and a main road. Terrible deal. We (and visitors around us) were deeply disappointed and felt scammed at best. Fool me once, shame on you. Never again.

I enjoyed the gorges but to be honest the best views are from the public road at the back. From down in the gorges you get very narrow views that don't really give you the grand perspective. It's also very expensive for what is just a simple path. There is nothing special added on for the experience. There are no real running costs for this that demand €10 per person. Slovenia does charge an excessive amount for people to walk through its natural sites. That's coming from someone from the UK where we have lots of overpriced country houses and old ruined castles charging to visit but the prices in Slovenia are another level entirely especially when the experience is just so average. There are no abundance of catering options, no water fountains, no bins, no well trained enthusiastic guides, no special lighting or other additions. It's just an excessive charge to walk yourself through an area that is entirely natural and should be for the benefit of all and any maintenance costs should be adequately covered from the tax on revenues that local businesses receive from all the tourists. There was a cafe on top of the hill that had full tables throughout our time there so clearly the gorge drives people to the area to spend money so just be content with that. On the plus side the parking was free and they offer a shuttle bus to the start but I didn't see it used as it's not far and it was a nice mild day.

Beautiful place with very well kept traces and bridges. Since the very entrance you follow the Tolminka river and gradually go higher until you get to the Devil's bridge. There aren't that may steep trails and in some sections you can come right down and feel the river. Employees at the entrance are very polite, patient and will describe you entire route and give you the map. If you come to the place by car, you can choose between two parking lots (P1 and P2). P1 is just on the entrance and costs 3€ per hour, while P2 is free of charge and 10 min away, but you can get to the gorges by a well tented path and on the way you can see the Austro-Hungarian military cemetery from WWI.

Truly a natural wonder. When I read all the complaints about the ticket charge I thought it was absolutely barren. However there’s a well constructed and curated walking path with bridges and tunnels taking you parts of nature that would otherwise be inaccessible. 99% of the world is nature doesn’t mean you can access it. I think the admission is well worth it considering the amount of construction it took to make this beautiful gorge accessible to normal visitors. Come in the fall when the leaves are changing and almost no visitors. Thats when this place is literally a fairyland.
