Fonda Fish Farm — Attraction in Upravna enota Piran / Unità amministrativa Pirano

My husband and I recently visited Fonda Fish Farm and we had a terrific experience that was authentic and personal. The visit was not only very informative but was fun and the degustation of sea bass carpaccio and wine was delicious.

After first hearing a captivating narrative of how the family achieved their vision for the farm from Dr. Irena Fonda, we boarded a pontoon boat and headed out to the fish farming pools in the middle of the Piran Bay and saw the sea bass being fed and percolating to the top of their pools. All the visits are guided by family members or other informed and invested individuals so one truly learns a tremendous amount about the sustainable practices employed by Fonda for raising their sea bass, sea bream & mussels. Professional visuals made it easy to see some of the details, for example, the nets undersea.

We were lucky to have Lean Fonda, Irene’s brother, captain our boat that day and he generously shared his knowledge of the area with us as well. The team could not have been more hospitable.

The story of the Fonda family is truly inspiring, especially when Irena Fonda shares her knowledge and passion. We learned a lot about fish and the sea, which you will appreciate even more after this visit. In addition, you learn how to choose the right fish for a healthy meal. We experienced also a cooking workshop in nature, by the sea, under the pine trees. I didn't know you could make such a delicious meal so easily with so much fun. We tasted raw sea bass and refreshing tomatoes on bruschetta accompanied by delicious wine. The tour was excellent. It was very informative and entertaining. The staff and our tour guide was very friendly and welcoming. Our bout ride was pleasant as we went there on a sunny day. After showing us the sea bass, they surprised us with the dehydration of sea bass carpaccio and bakala which were amazing. The quality really shows the importance of this way of farming and bio friendly mindset that Fonda family are known for. To summon up I’d recommend this tour to families with kids as it could really be a fun and educational time spending for everyone involved.
