AFB Ysterplaat has always been like a second home for me since my high school years. Bring your kids, I'm sure they will enjoy seeing the various aircraft and helicopters up close. Photos are one thing but nothing compares to actually being there next to a Mirage III or F-1, not to mention the Sabre, Harvard, Ventura, super frelon, wasp, Alouette 3 and many more. Once a month the avro Shackleton's engines are run which is a great time to visit. The friends of the museum are an awesome bunch of people who love to share their passion for aviation with interested folks and kids. Their boerie rolls are also the best I've had. So, get here around 0900 on a Saturday and grab a great cup of coffee and hang around for the engine run then browse the merch and grab a...

Visited Saaf Museum Ysterplaat on Saturday, 10 June 2023, from Pretoria. We support the museum at Swartkops regularly. This was our first visit to the base. What an awesome friendly and professional reception by all the Volunteers. They took time to personally come and greet when we exited our car!! The tour of the museum was explained to all. So informative. All aircraft are in pristine condition and hangers spotless. Although smaller than Swartkops, the whole experience was the best ever. Thank you Pierre du Toit for sharing interesting experiences and your helicopter model building with me. See you guys again. Keep up the excellent work!!...

Very interesting and well put-together exhibits in the main display hall. However, we went there on a Wednesday and were denied access to the main hangar as it is in a "secure area", only accessible on Saturdays. As a result we spent most of our time in the smaller hangar which - at the time of visiting - was rather messy and dirty. None of the very interesting artefacts in this hangar had labels or descriptions, necessitating plenty of googling. I would love to see the same level of thought and effort put into this hangar as the main...

What an experience, truly something for young and old! Not sure who had the better time between us and the kids. So much to see and the effort that has gone into presenting the history as well as the wonderful exhibits are truly world class. Please take the time to strike up a conversation with the volunteers, they have a wealth of knowledge to share and their passion for preserving these amazing pieces of engineering is truly commendable. One morning was not enough time to go through everything and we look forward to being regular visitors.

Very interesting museum with cool artefacts on display including 2 aircrafts and a tank. However once a month they have a special Saturday where they open up an exclusive hangar to the public which has many more amazing aircraft and helicopters. They also start an old Shackleton aircraft with the propellers running at full speed. There's food and drinks for purchase as well. The museum is free on normal days but on Saturday they charge R50/adult and kids free. Check their FB page for the special dates.
