AFB Ysterplaat has always been like a second home for me since my high school years. Bring your kids, I'm sure they will enjoy seeing the various aircraft and helicopters up close. Photos are one thing but nothing compares to actually being there next to a Mirage III or F-1, not to mention the Sabre, Harvard, Ventura, super frelon, wasp, Alouette 3 and many more. Once a month the avro Shackleton's engines are run which is a great time to visit. The friends of the museum are an awesome bunch of people who love to share their passion for aviation with interested folks and kids. Their boerie rolls are also the best I've had. Read moreVisited Saaf Museum Ysterplaat on Saturday, 10 June 2023, from Pretoria. We support the museum at Swartkops regularly. This was our first visit to the base. Thank you Pierre du Toit for sharing interesting experiences and your helicopter model building with me. See you guys again. Keep up the excellent work!!...

However, we went there on a Wednesday and were denied access to the main hangar as it is in a "secure area", only accessible on Saturdays. As a result we spent most of our time in the smaller hangar which - at the time of visiting - was rather messy and dirty. None of the very interesting artefacts in this hangar had labels or descriptions, necessitating plenty of googling. I would love to see the same level of thought and effort put into this hangar as the main...
