I can't imagine why I have never written a review for this lovely garden before but I am now. This well-managed, gift of a garden in suburbia, is one of the most delightful public gardens to visit in Cape Town and beyond. Established in 1845 by timber merchant and carpenter, Ralph Henry Arderne, when he acquired some land from the Stellenberg Farm. Arderne went about laying out and cultivating his garden in front of his home 'The Hill' (since demolished), and carefully acquiring special trees from every corner of the globe, which he knew would do well in his garden. His son, Henry Matthew Arderne, took over and cared for the garden later, but when he died, the garden was almost lost to us as the land was to be sold for development by the next owner. Fortunately the City's Director of Parks, Mr. A. W. van den Houten, recognised the value of the garden and persuaded the City to buy the most important parts of the garden before it was all subdivided and sold. Today we have 6 champion trees which are well-cared for and protected and a new and exciting developments all the time. Currently they ponds have been restored, with new fencing and waterplants, and the garden is well-tended and always a pleasure to visit. It is also a safe place to meditate, contemplate, or just sit in peace and admire the landscape. Weekends are sometimes very busy as it's a popular venue for wedding photographs and parties, but remember, no alcohol allowed on the premises.

With a special permit to hold a small gathering Claremont Gardens now offers an alternative to a bigger busier park! We hosted a small gathering of 8...but to bring in tables etc u need to get permit from Friends of Ardene Gardens. The Bridal parties make for great people watching as u turn into wannabe fashion critics!! Lol...the brides add a lovely dimension to an otherwise ordinary picnic. Take ur kids for a stroll, meet ur lover on a bench, take out ur knitting and watch the brides...it offers so much if peace, reconnection with nature and tranquility is what u after. No music. No alcohol. Arderne Gardens is a definate winner...any season...any weather...u will be refreshed and relaxed after ur visit there!

This is a hard one to do because I really love the place, and the incredible peace I always find there. I love the staff, and the care they take, and that they always remember me. Friends of Arderne Gardens really do a great job of caring and planning as well. The one thing I was really disappointed about, and quite upset about is that in the worst of the drought last year, they let the fish die without removing them from dry pond. It made me sad to do that. I asked several institutions to help, and the remaining huge, and ancient koi fish were permanently removed. I do still go there a lot, and it's a great place to be except on weekends it gets very busy with wedding photo shoots. It's safe, clean, and suits people of any age. The toilet facilities are clean as well.

Tranquility at its Finest: A Perfect Picnic Spot!! Ardene Gardens is truly a hidden gem. Nestled amidst a busy neighborhood, it offers a serene escape with its **beautiful walkways** that wind through the landscape. The **gorgeous trees** provide ample shade, creating the perfect atmosphere for a leisurely stroll or a peaceful picnic. One of the highlights of Ardene Gardens is the picturesque setting. Whether you're looking to relax with a good book, enjoy a picnic meal with friends, or simply soak in the natural beauty, this garden offers it all. I highly recommend Ardene Gardens for anyone seeking a tranquil day out. It’s the perfect spot to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Beautiful garden that you can walk through and have a picnic in or just go for a stroll. There are signs explaining the tress and plants that are in the garden. There is a sign in the front of what is allowed in the park. Went during the week so was not busy at all. Was a bit of struggle to find parking but was able to get parking on the other side of the road and then walked across Really beautiful where you can walk across the bridge and view the pond that has fish ducks and even crabs in the water

I lived in 3rd avenue in Claremont in the 1970s. The wonder of Claremont has been its natural ambience and its interactive student and family life. Its alive and full of secret wonder. The gardens, as we called it, created a time away; a time to regroup and a time for rest, but also enjoying pure rustic life. Very interesting secret place. The many private house gardens has had a great effect upon my life and I now create wonderful organic box gardens and create Permaculture gardens for homes.
