An impromptu decision on a Monday (public holiday) to just go for a walk as "dog parents" turned into a huge adventure. We took our three dogs (small, medium and large breeds) along. We were pleasantly surprised and impressed by what we saw! We first did the 2.5km walk to see how our "pure-bred Jozi dogs" would react, their reaction was favourable, thus we decided to continue and dare the 5km walk. By the time we came to the 3km notice, our girls (the dogs) were tired... Then they saw another dog and decided they won't give up... (Poor us!), we took on the last 2km like champs 🏆 and finished without taking the escape route to the Big Red Barn. Now, back at home, our three babies are fast asleep - it was a challenging afternoon!
The routes are beautifully mapped out and marked - also reminders to keep your fur babies on their leashes-, so you know exactly where you are and how far you are going. There are 4 different routes (distances) to choose from. The bicycle and walking routes are split from each other, so the chance of an accident happening where a dog chases a rider or riders having to slow down because of hikers with dogs should not happen if you stick to your designated route.
Also, I need to add, every few 100 meters, there are bowls filled with fresh and clean water sponsored by Outsurance for the dogs to drink from. It was an exciting and thrilling experience to us as a family.
Next on our to-do-list is the Tree Top Adventure and Puzzle park at The Big Red Barn. The afternoon out in nature is definitely worth the R45-00 entrance fee per adult. If you are looking for an escape to a clean and natural environment for the day, this is definitely the place...
Read moreThe Big Red Barn in Irene offers a delightful escape for nature enthusiasts and families alike. The hiking trails are well-marked and beginner-friendly, with options of 2.5 km, 5 km, and 10 km routes. As you walk, you’re treated to a variety of beautiful plants and birds, making each hike a refreshing experience. For mountain biking enthusiasts, there are also well-maintained MTB trails.
After a hike, enjoying a traditionally Italian-style pizza with a thin, crispy base at the on-site restaurant is a treat, just don’t forget their unforgettable milkshakes😉. The open and clean environment adds to the dining pleasure.
For a creative activity, ‘Create’ (on the other side of the entrance road) offers ceramic painting. It’s a therapeutic experience, and after a few weeks, you receive your beautifully painted item, making for a memorable keepsake. It’s easy to lose track of time here, so it’s wise to budget ample time for this activity.
A significant bonus is the dog-friendly policy, complete with plenty of water bowls, making it a perfect spot for the whole family, including our canine companions.
Overall, The Big Red Barn provides a well-rounded experience that caters to both adventure seekers and those looking for a...
Read moreUpdate: Jan 2025 Flow track, pump track, and berm city still a bit sketchy... But the trails are in great shape and awesome for speedy runs. There is an outstanding new bike wash on site now - Redline Rides. Valet-style wash and lube. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Update Jun 2024: the flow track and pump track need work. The flow track, particularly, is becoming borderline unsafe. Still a good ride, but I'm changing my rating to 3 stars based on this. Look out for black sparrowhawks and tawny eagles in the eucalyptus forest near the start - we've had some great sightings here. Also keep an eye on the ground for chameleons crossing the road - don't squish them, please.
A regular at these trails... for a reason. Salomie and Moses are wonderful, greeting you warmly at the start of your ride. There's no litter, walkers don't stray onto the MTB trail and there's plenty of shade so you can ride beyond 8am in summer. While some sections could use a little TLC, the trail is properly designed, so you can navigate obstacles safely (within your personal limits). Trail is still OK, even after heavy rain. The Big Red Barn Cafe is a great end to a...
