Definitely a 'jewel in the Wilderness'
After you have got your permit from the Ebb & Flow camp in the Wilderness National Park, proceed to the start opposite the purification plant alongside the rail/ road bridge. This is not any old forest hike, the wooden bridges and steps lure you deeper into the forest.
When descending to the river, be on the lookout for fish in the clear water. The river is crossed by means of stepping stones or pontoon. Now follow the path along the eastern bank of the Touw River to the boardwalk, which affords hikers beautiful viewpoints onto the river and surrounds. Due to its wondrous beauty, this world class boardwalk must be traversed. The waterfall offers gorgeous pools for dipping, and taking a picnic basket is a good idea. The total distance is 7.2km and takes 3-4 hours. Another equally beautiful option is hiring a canoe from Eden Adventures, in the Ebb & Flow South rest camp, and rowing to a point where the river becomes a narrow, shallow stream. Views are unsurpassed - the water is crystal clear and the trees add to the general feeling of tranquillity. Leave your canoe on the banks of the river and follow the path to the boardwalk. There are also numerous picnic spots to stop over next to the river. Forgetting your camera will be almost unforgivable.

Read moreMy family and I were camping at Ebb & Flow and found this trail about a 7 min drive from the campsite via the gravel road. The rain just cleared as we started the trail. Everything was so fresh, and the birds were chirping away. We saw the Knysna Loerie, the Cape Batis, and the Sugarbird. On the trail, we found little crabs also enjoying the freshness of the forest. It was a beautiful hike, nice and short. We also went up to the viewpoint, quite a steep climb, but worth it! There's also a bench up there if you would like to snack. The water level was quite low throughout the trail and only a little stream of water from the waterfall. But everything was spectacular! Be mindful as some rocks can be slippery when wet, and some tree roots find their way over the path, my feet always finds a way to trip over them as I'm to amazed by a bird or the beauty of the forest that I don't look where I'm going. Read moreI found the info I got from reviews quite confusing. Here is my experience: This specific location does start a hiking point. You have to cover some gravel road to get there. While the boards advise you to obtain a permit, there was no station to do so. The hike is great, beautiful scenery and some streams. It ends at a waterfall. It's just short of 2km out and you return on the same path. It's not too hard but I think it can get more difficult in raining season. It shouldn't be impossible with little kids or for older folks. You can turn around at any point and head back. The trail ends near a waterfall with plenty of rocks where you can sit and rest or snack. Beautiful trail with loads of shade....
