From the reviews and website I was excited too much about outshoom and this farm . But reality is different . Thought to share with other travellers so you can take an informed decision as time is precious in travel . 1. This place is 2 hrs drive from Knysna or 1 hour from Mossel bay and it is not worth for that . 2.Even-though they claim it is a live farm there is only around 25 ostriches here , it is a demo farm , no visitors allowed in originL farm . 3. Check the weather before you start . If temp is more than 32, do not plan there , it is very very hot up there and literally no visitors on a hotter day . Feb month is extremely hot . 4. The Pepper tree restorant is not what they advertise, no vibe , no great menu , NO Ostrich EGG dishes, food is just average . 5. Eventhough they tell there is a tour to the incubator even at the ticket counter , later the guide told us that is in another farm and we are not allowed to go due to govt regulation of hygiene at incubators . Overall conclusion , after spending a full day for this trip from Knysna , we felt that we should have avoided it and do something better in close distance . Positive side - 1. If you are crazy about ostrich , lot of info available . 2. If you are traveling anyway to the caves, then it is ok to visit the farm . Tips - you can by ostrich eggs in pick N pay at outshroom . We can make scrambled eggs or boiled egg with it - R70 per egg, boiling...
Read moreOn our way back to Johannesburg my wife and I popped in at Highgate to see some ostriches and to stretch our legs. What a wonderful surprise when we met Johan at the Peppertree Restaurant and he invited us to share a kettle of tea on the house, while enjoying the wonderfully relaxing atmosphere under the big pepper tree. Then he invited us to drive over to their guest house to have a look around. There we found Louise (and the staff) doing some real hard housekeeping... They were very gracious to allow us to walk around the premises amid their hard labour. We were just about to leave when Johan showed up and took us on a personal guided tour of the beautiful Victorian house which is now the main lodge. What a wonderful experience and what wonderful hospitality shown to two complete strangers! Guys, you rock! Louise, thank you for your friendliness amid the chaos - you are great. Johan, dankie vir jou en jou juweel van `n vrou! STERKTE...
Read moreIf you can only go to 1 ostrich farm during your time in Oudshoorn, do yourself a favor and go here!
This place is South Africa's first show farm open to visitors, so they have very knowledgeable tour guides who can speak to the area's history, legacy, and future.
Being on this farm, I learned that an ostrich brain is smaller than its eye, ostrich races began here but not longer persist, and that you can buy an ostrich egg at the Spar or Pick n' Pay in Outdshoorn (that's what we did ~ then made an omelet!). Also, feeding the ostriches from behind–with their faces grazing the side of your face–was probably the most thrilling but scary experience I've had!
Besides the tour, I believe their gift shop is excellent. After doing lots of comparison shopping, I concluded that they have the best feather dusters of all the...
