The 5km Rietvlei Parkrun is a hidden gem that combines the elements of challenge and majesty in a single event. I usually run it with my 7yrs old daughter. Set against the backdrop of a scenic trail route, it's a race that takes you on a journey through the breathtaking beauty of nature,...but what truly makes this event exceptional is the incredible community of volunteers who make it all possible. A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated volunteers who put in their time and effort to ensure the smooth running of this event. Without their unwavering commitment, there would be no Rietvlei Parkrun. Their enthusiasm and support create an atmosphere that is warm and inviting, making runners of all levels feel welcome. A big shoutout to Discovery Vitality for their sponsorship of Parkruns across the country, including this one. Their support plays a crucial role in making these events accessible to everyone and fostering a culture of health and wellness. The 5km route itself is a rollercoaster of excitement. It begins with a fast and flat stretch that allows you to find your stride, but don't get too comfortable. Halfway through, you'll face a 500m climb that tests your mettle, followed by a thrilling descent that gets your heart racing. The route flattens out towards the end, providing the perfect opportunity for a strong sprint to the finish line. My daughter and i pride ourselves in the sprint to the finish line. With an average of 800 runners, the Rietvlei Parkrun is a vibrant and energetic gathering of individuals with a shared passion for running and walking. The race starts every Saturday at 8am, setting the perfect tone for a great weekend ahead. And the best part? It's absolutely free to enter, making it accessible to runners of all backgrounds, and you can bring your fur babies, are welcome!! In summary, the 5km Rietvlei Parkrun is a race that encapsulates the spirit of the running community. It's challenging, majestic, and brought to life by dedicated volunteers and generous sponsors. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just starting out, this event is an absolute must visit. Lace up your running shoes, get out and come experience the thrill of Rietvlei Parkrun for yourself!

Parkrun plus. The venue caters for way more than a parkrun. Lots of parking available inside even though on arrival many were parking outside the venue. It’s well coordinated, has a festive atmosphere at the start, and plenty of Marshalls to guide or take care of those who could get into trouble along the route. The course has a steady climb, mainly on dirt and gravel track so keep watching the road, as there are many distractions, and the road has a few rocky patches to trip you up. It’s also a big field, +-1500 the day we ran, and can be hot and dusty in places. Once past the many lappas, which can be hired, you follow well signposted Parkrun signs, into grassland, later on through a tree covering before open veld again, this time bordering a neighbouring school, passed two dams, and fishing ponds, through some reeds and then the course heads back to the finish area. Many channels make for an efficient finish. Adequate toilet facilities at the start and end. Dogs and prams allowed. The run occurs inside the Rietvlei Zoo Farm, which has many other facilities, too numerous to mention. A Parkrun I wouldn’t miss.

This is a great parkrun! There are a lot of runners and the volunteers are professional and friendly. The course starts down a tar road which is wide and great to spread the field out. You then go on a dirt loop through a small forest before coming past the main field of runners. From there it’s a climb on dirt roads and wide well marked grass tracks. You loop around a few dams and there’s a nice run into the finish line. There are a few uphill drags that make it difficult to get a PB but this is still a course that you can go quickly on. The farm is well kept and there are loads of other users, which makes it busy. There is loads of parking inside but one entrance so it is constrained just before the start. Get there early. There is a nice looking coffee place, but because of a long queue I didn’t get anything. Overall I’d rate this a 9/10 Tourist #23
